Nathaniel
My eyes found their way to Aria leaning over the window like a little child coming to Disneyland for the first time, except it wasn’t a childlike excitement she was experiencing. Her fist folded instantly by the side, she was anxious at the wealth of my family. My mother’s wealth, to be exact. She turned to me and gave me a nervous smile, her hair billowing about.
She resembled a princess who doesn’t exactly know how much value she has because she has no self-confidence.
I wish to see just how good she was at utilizing situations. My family won’t be fun for her; that I’m sure of.
The car halted, and I stepped out, my hands outstretched to Aria. She took it hesitantly and walked alongside me. Her grip tightened around me. I could tell she was anxious. I tightened my grip around her reassuringly; a part of me deeply wanted to comfort her. She looked at me with those big hazel eyes of hers, her anxiety lessening.
“Don’t be my personal assistant or the woman fake dating me. Just be Aria Vale, the one who beat up her cheating ex.”
She smiles, “I can do that.”
We walked inside past the aisle, and I sighted my family seated across the dining table; I was about to lead Aria to join them. When she hastily stopped me, her eyes bulged in shock.
“What?” I asked.
She gestured to my face, cursing underneath her breath. “Why the hell did you kiss me?” She whispered inaudibly. She dragged me closer, her soft floral scent drifting around me. “Your lips are stained with my lipstick.” She gently ran her thumb across my lip, cleaning off the stain.
I smirked. Does she think kissing her and staining my lips was accidental? I glanced across the room and spotted my family, who appeared quite uncomfortable with the scene.
She stepped back once it was clear, and I led her to the dining room.
“It appears you two were busy in the car earlier.” Adrian tore his steak quite furiously.
“I suppose things like this are common with new couples; you act with zero restraints,” his mother commented, eyeing up Aria.
“Let me introduce my fiancée, Aria Vale. Aria, this is my family.” She gently lowered her head, muttering her greetings.
Father hadn’t said a word; he appeared visibly displeased. Aria had her seat, and I settled opposite her.
“I suppose Nathaniel was threatened by my words to make you my w***e; he forgot he had a ten billion dollar fraud in the company pointing back to him.”
Aria smiled tightly. “I might be of low class and status, but is it not proper to talk this inappropriately, especially during a dinner?”
He leaned close to her. “Is that what he told you to say? Our family is one of class and grace? You have some nerve, correcting me. Would you love to be reminded of your place?”
“You seem to be pushing the limit, Adrian. You appear too invested in my dealings,” I warned.
“I don’t care about what type of relationship you have with your office wh-re. I know as much that your dealings are fraudulent.”
Father slammed his fist on the desk, infuriated. His mother dissuaded Adrian from going further.
“You did a good job diverting public scrutiny from the fact you might be responsible for the bankruptcy of our company subsidiaries,” she said.
“It is still under investigation, Kate; you know what they say about those pointing fingers. I don’t suppose you expect me to keep my love life vacant because of some allegations.”
She scoffed, raising her brows. “Since when did you care about love? She doesn’t look like the one you squandered the ten billion on. She might even look better in rags.”
Father stared tersely at Aria. “Do you love him?”
She blinked, caught unaware by his question, and sent a stare across to me before returning her gaze to my father and smiling heartily with her eyes. “I love him.”
Adrian and his mother loudly scoffed. “This is clearly a gimmick by Nathan to distract from the investigation.”
He ignored them and looked at me. “When do you intend to get married to her?”
“In three months,” I announced, hoping I had calculated what would come after.
“Postpone the public audit till then, and keep any investigation out of the media and on the low. Any aggression from Adrian might further ruin our family image and further fuel the rumors of rivalry between both brothers. Talk to your son, Kate,” he warned tersely and dropped his napkin. “I’m done here.”
Adrian and his mother were beyond pissed; she folded her napkin into a fold. I smiled boldly for all to see. Three more months to change those pointing fingers to those who were truly responsible.
Aria Vale.
The dining table was silent for a while with only clatters of knives on the ceramic plates.
I thought it would continue the same way until Nathan was done, and I would be able to leave this beautiful mansion with the rots of hell living in it.
It is no wonder now why he was ruthless; he was raised amongst devils.
“I researched a bit about your background. I was deeply curious about what Nathan found interesting about you. Then I realized you both had a similar background. Absent mothers.”
Nathan tensed, his blue eyes immediately darkened. I knew if she continued, he might raze the room.
“They are a bit different, Mother; her mother is a convict, and his died, leaving him at a young age.”
“A convict as a mother seems slightly better than a motherless child.” She chuckled, sipping her wine. “Don’t you think so, Nathaniel?” She asked him, and I noticed his hand tightening around his glass.
I stood hastily and hurried to him. I gently peeled the glass from his hand and clasped my hand around his hands instead.
“We would take our leave, Mrs. Anfield.”
“You are quick to leave.”
“You haven’t been exactly welcoming or kind with your words.”
“That’s an exaggeration of my words. I was only joking.”
“The same way others would joke, you trapped Mr. Anfiled with a child when working as his secretary and forced his wife to her death after you took her position.”
Adrian and she were visibly infuriated. “You have quite the audacity.”
I chuckled. “I thought you’d take it as a joke. Is that not how the family jokes?”
“You dirtbag, poor thing he dusted from the gutters. You'll need to be taught some lessons.” She furiously walked over and raised her hand to slap me, but Nathaniel caught it midway.
Adrian intercepted and released his mother’s arm from Nathaniel’s tight grasp. “You are pushing your limits.” He warned both brothers, glaring at each other.
Nathan was rather calm. “I remember saying the same thing earlier. See who can't handle half of what they dish out. We are done here.” 4
“You should put your wild lady on a leash.”
“Your mother and I share some similarities; we are both women for starters, and we dated our bosses. To add, she is a bit of a b***h for her age. You might need to heed your own advice and put her on a leash.”
Mrs. Anfield scoffed loudly, deeply offended. Her evident displeasure and newfound hatred for me were etched on her face.
I let Nathaniel lead me out. My heart was racing at how bold I was there. “That was a bit excessive.” I breathed out; worry rested between my eyebrows.
“Underwhelming,” he commented and settled in the car, waiting.
I blinked, confused. He was not pleased. How extra does he want me to be?
“You’ll be moving in with me tonight. I'll have your properties moved in tomorrow.” He announced.
“What?” I gasped.
Chapter epilogue.
Maybe Aria doesn’t truly know herself. She wasn’t meek like she thinks she was, even when she catered to my needs. Her subtle curses, she thought, were inaudible when I was being an asshole and met my ears. I walked past the room I had designated for her to prepare in my condo; she had an obvious frown on her face, displeased as the stylist was wasting her time deliberately. I found myself walking towards her.
“Could you hasten up? We have to leave in an hour.” I cautioned the stylist, but upon returning I caught the stylist trying to belittle her again. This time she handled it herself.
"I made use of a witch potion."
“It is almost unbelievable, you two…” I stood away from their view and watched as one glare from Aria caused her to stutter.
“Risking your job over a callous gossip.”
“I’ll be paid thrice as much to give out what I saw to tabloid news. Different versions.” The woman threatened.
“I will pay you four times that amount. Make sure you tell the reporters how lovey-dovey we were.” She shut her up finally.
I was never disappointed in her when I picked her up from the police station after she almost murdered the asshole she was dating; I was rather impressed with how much damage she could inflict when hurt and knew she was perfect for my plan. Today, Kate Anfield met her match; I couldn’t be more pleased.
