I woke to the smell of coffee and Nellie's voice. She was talking to someone, but when I heard Jude's voice, I quickly realized she hadn't been on the phone like I had initially thought. Still in the sleepy haze, I couldn't understand why I would hear his voice.
Jude told me he would be gone for a couple of days, but if he was here, he had only been gone a few hours. I got out of bed and looked at myself in the mirror before self-consciously brushing my sleep-tangled hair out of my face.
Jude would not have cared if I looked homeless straight out of bed. When we were younger, we had sleepovers, so this look wouldn't have been new to him. Yet I had secretly loved this man for so long when I was younger; how he saw me still mattered. E
