Chapter Thirty-Two: Eyes Wide Open

I was halfway out the door of our cheap motel room when Rikki delivered the second dose of the knockout drug. The surveillance footage played on repeat in my nightmares as I lay there helpless. It was the cruelest kind of torture.
“She woke up about an hour ago and went back to sleep,” Rikki reported with a yawn.
I didn’t respond. Nothing I wanted to say would have been a smart move. She knew me well enough to know why I had kept silent.
“Can we turn this off now?” she asked impatiently at my lack of response.
I sat up in the bed, determined to snatch my computer from her hands, but the room spun from the leftover effects of the drugs.
“Absolutely not,” I finally responded, as I stood up a little slower than the last attempt.
