Inside Jared’s apartment, up on the fifth floor, Shai lay down for a nap, admitting he was exhausted from the day’s misadventures and too upset to do anything else. After an hour, Jared checked in on him—there he was, sprawled sideways on Jared’s bed, as if he was running, mouth open, eyes closed. Jared watched him breathing so peacefully and felt a twinge of sadness. Jared’s own mother had been so supportive of him, while Shai’s family had behaved so terribly. How could they kick out this man who had been a part of their lives for so long? How was that right in anybody’s eyes?
