The Engagement Dilemma

Episode 2 Written by FARUQ HAMZAT William I drove straight to my father’s house, my mind racing with a mix of anger and confusion. How could they do this to me? Confronting him was my only option, even if I wasn’t sure what I would say. When I arrived, I stormed into the living room, where I found my father tending to the garden, seemingly unfazed by my sudden entrance. “Good morning, Dad,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady, though my emotions were anything but calm. “Morning,” he replied, pausing his work to look up at me. “Hope there’s no problem?” “There’s definitely a problem, and it’s a big one!” I replied sharply, unable to hold back my frustration. “You and Mom are forcing me into an engagement! You can’t be serious!” My father’s expression turned serious as he set down his gardening tools. “And what’s wrong with that? Anna is a good match for you.” “Good match? Dad, I barely know her! We’re not even friends!” I exclaimed, my voice rising. “You can’t just decide my future like this!” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “William, I understand you’re upset, but sometimes we need to trust our parents to make decisions that are in our best interests. Anna comes from a good family, and it’s time you settled down.” “Settled down? I’m not ready for that! I don’t even have feelings for her!” I retorted, my heart racing. “Look, I know you respect me, and I want you to be happy,” he said, trying to reassure me. “But this is part of growing up. Give her a chance.” After a tense exchange, I left my father’s house, still seething with anger but knowing there was little I could do to change their minds. The drive to my office was filled with frustration, and I arrived later than usual, feeling the weight of my predicament. As I walked into the office, I spotted Sam at his desk, engrossed in signing documents. He looked up and greeted me with his usual easygoing demeanor. “What’s up, bro?” he asked. I plopped down in the chair across from him, letting out a heavy sigh. “I’m not good.” “What happened?” he asked, noticing my serious tone. I shared the news, my voice laced with disbelief. “You won’t believe it—my parents are forcing me into an engagement.” “Hmmm,” he murmured, contemplating my words. “Why the hmmm?” I inquired, my curiosity piqued. “Nothing, just thinking of what I’m going to wear to the party,” he replied with a smirk. “What! Are you insane?” I yelled, exasperated by his flippant attitude. He just laughed, seemingly unfazed by my outrage. “What is it? Why are you yelling?” he asked rhetorically. “I know you’re not ready, but do you have a choice?” “You’re right,” I admitted reluctantly. “I can’t reject it outright, but I can’t just accept it like that either.” “Forget that. So when is the party?” he asked, leaning back in his chair. “Saturday,” I replied, dread pooling in my stomach. “And who is the lucky lady?” he pressed. “Anna,” I answered, the name leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. “Anna Jackson?” he said, raising an eyebrow. “Yes,” I confirmed, feeling a wave of frustration wash over me. “Wow, that’s great!” he exclaimed, though I could hear the sarcasm in his voice. “But I don’t love her,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Chill, guy. Just do what your parents want,” he said softly, trying to be supportive. “Okay, I’ll think about it,” I replied, though I knew it wouldn’t be easy. He chuckled lightly. “No need to think too hard—let’s just get prepared for the engagement.” Later that evening, after a long day filled with swirling thoughts and mounting pressure, I returned home feeling drained. I didn’t even bother to eat dinner; instead, I went straight to bed, hoping sleep would provide some clarity. But as I lay there, staring at the ceiling, I couldn’t shake the feeling that my life was about to change in ways I wasn’t ready for. I rolled over, pulling the blankets tighter around me, but sleep eluded me. My mind raced with images of Anna and the looming engagement. What if this was the beginning of a life I didn’t want? Would I ever find a way to escape this path? TBC…
