“We planned a date for the wedding. July fourth. One of our favorite holidays. Fireworks galore. A celebration within a celebration. Why not? We wanted a massive party with three hundred guests, a gazebo, three tents, and horses. He was Jewish and I’m Catholic, so we decided to have a nondenominational ceremony, which pissed off his mother, Helen, but both Evan and I realized that life was going to go on and press forward, no matter how we celebrated our love.
