"Hiss..."
The icy beast's pupils and Qi Liang's bright eyes locked onto each other. Qi Liang's body stiffened, his mouth gaping as he sucked in a breath of cold air. A chill spread from head to toe, making every hair stand on end.
Qi Liang shuddered, trying to speak, but found himself unable to utter a word. After gasping for air and mustering his voice, he finally managed to shout, "Bear!"
"Roar!"
Before Zhao Ke could fully comprehend what was happening, he heard a bear roar and a sound of rupture behind him. Instinctively, he lunged sideways.
"Bang!"
Dust, debris, and rubble hit Zhao Ke, causing him intense pain all over his body. When he turned around, Zhao Ke's heart sank halfway.
"The wall... collapsed!"
This earthen house was already quite old, with many cracks in the walls. Zhao Ke had considered this when entering, but he never expected it to collapse for real.
"Roar!"
The low roar made the faces of the three people in the room change. Through the dust, a blurry silhouette gradually became clearer.
In the misty forest before, they hadn't been able to get a clear view of the bear's appearance. Now, illuminated by the oil lamp, the dark fur, sturdy claws, and massive figure filled Zhao Ke with a deep sense of oppression.
There was no doubt, the creature before them was the real Bear II. In the presence of such a massive beast, even taking a deep breath seemed like a luxury.
Especially those blood-red eyes staring at the three people in the room, making them feel their entire bodies prickle with fear.
At that moment, Bear II's gaze suddenly shifted direction, focusing directly on Chen Jing cowering in the corner.
"Help... help... help me!"
Chen Jing's face turned pale, her muscles tensing involuntarily as she tightly gripped the fruit knife Zhao Ke had handed her, curling up against the wall.
Bear II's gaze fell on the fruit knife in Chen Jing's hand. With a strong sniff from its sturdy nose, it detected a familiar scent on the blade. Its pupils constricted, and it slowly revealed sharp fangs, accompanied by a surge of furious killing intent and a low growl.
"Roar!"
Chen Jing only saw darkness in front of her, as a large black bear paw rapidly enlarged in her pupils.
"Duck!"
Qi Liang reached out to push, but his legs were clumsy. As he moved, he suddenly felt a rush of heat on his face, like being splashed with hot water. A strong smell of blood filled the air as he wiped his face, blood dripping from his forehead.
Looking again at Chen Jing, he saw her body still standing there, but half of her head was gone.
"Damn it."
Qi Liang gasped, grabbing the axe on the table and swinging it towards Bear II's head. However, Bear II swept its forelimb, sending Qi Liang flying along with the axe.
"Bang..."
Qi Liang's vision darkened, almost passing out from the impact. He struggled to get up, feeling like his bones were about to fall apart. Luckily, his physique saved him; otherwise, he would have fainted long ago. Shaking his head, he struggled to get up, but then the light in front of Qi Liang suddenly dimmed.
Raising his head, he saw Bear II's massive body standing upright like a human, its head almost touching the ceiling beam, its blood-red eyes staring coldly at him.
"Hey! Bear II."
Hearing someone call its name, Bear II instinctively raised its head, its pupils constricting. Zhao Ke was holding Bear II's head, waving his hand and throwing it into the boiling pot.
"Roar!"
Seeing this, Bear II's eyes changed instantly, ignoring Qi Liang and turning towards the stove.
"Why are you still standing there? Run!"
In the blink of an eye, Zhao Ke grabbed Qi Liang's arm with one hand and picked up the axe from the ground with the other, pulling him out.
Qi Liang's legs were not nimble, and Zhao Ke supported him as they ran out of the room, heading east.
By now, the sky was already slightly brightening. They hadn't run far when they heard Bear II's low roar behind them.
"Roar!"
Even though they couldn't understand, they could feel the intense killing intent in the sound. Then came a series of frantic running and roaring.
Zhao Ke could even hear the sound of trees being knocked down, indicating that the creature had gone mad upon seeing the cooked bear carcass in the pot.
"Bro, I can't keep going! Give me the axe, you run!" Qi Liang's forehead was covered in sweat beads. He realized that if they continued like this, they would both die.
Zhao Ke hesitated, looking at Qi Liang with a complicated gaze. He had pulled Qi Liang along to shield himself at a crucial moment, to buy time to escape. But now... Zhao Ke's inner turmoil grew. Human nature was complex. While kindness might exist, how many people could truly maintain it in the face of life and death? At least when facing death, all the hidden instincts would erupt.
Just like the white-collar woman pushing Chen Jing down the slope earlier. But now, Qi Liang's determined eyes made Zhao Ke truly doubt.
"Don't just stand there, run!"
Seeing Zhao Ke's hesitation, Qi Liang gritted his teeth, snatched the axe from Zhao Ke's hand, and pushed him away. "Hurry up and run! You pulled me earlier, now it's my turn to repay you."
Raised eyebrows, looking at Qi Liang's determined face, Zhao Ke changed his mind.
"What's your phone number?"
"What?" Qi Liang was puzzled.
"Your phone number!"
"I..."
Before Qi Liang could finish, they heard a rustling sound from the bushes behind them. Without waiting for Qi Liang to respond, Zhao Ke grabbed Qi Liang's arm and carried him on his back.
"Let go, if you do this, neither of us can escape."
Seeing this, Qi Liang's expression changed, trying to break free from Zhao Ke's grip. However, Zhao Ke's hand was like a vise, and despite Qi Liang's struggles, he couldn't break free.
"Shut up."
Carrying Qi Liang on his back, the two of them ran eastwards. Although the sun had not yet risen completely, at least they could see the road clearly, unlike before when it was pitch black.
Suddenly, Zhao Ke's footsteps paused. He looked around and sniffed the air, detecting a faint fragrance. Along with the damp cold air, there was also a strong smell of blood. With a quick glance around, Zhao Ke's eyes suddenly fell on the grass beside them, sprinkled with a circle of white powder. If they hadn't looked closely, they probably wouldn't have noticed it.
Putting Qi Liang down, Zhao Ke crouched down and scraped the grass aside with his hand. When he saw what was underneath, his heart skipped a beat, and a slight smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. He knew he had guessed right.
"Huh, it seems that guy didn't chase after us?"
Qil Liang on the side listened carefully to the surrounding noises. The original roar and heavy footsteps had unexpectedly disappeared.
Seeing this, a glimmer of hope rose in Qi Liang's heart, and a faint smile appeared on his slender face involuntarily. "Didn't chase us?"
After hearing Qi Liang's words, Zhao Ke couldn't help but feel puzzled. They weren't running fast, and their scent, comparable to a hunting dog's, meant that no matter where they ran, they couldn't shake off Bear Two's pursuit.
However, now they couldn't hear Bear Two's pursuit. Glancing around at the bushes, Zhao Ke thought to himself, "Didn't it really chase us?" But this thought only flashed through Zhao Ke's mind and was immediately dismissed.
Although a bear's eyesight wasn't good, its sense of smell was just as sharp, if not sharper than a hunting dog's. Their scent wouldn't have allowed them to lose Bear Two's pursuit.
Just as Zhao Ke felt puzzled, a sudden gust of cold wind changed direction from the nearby bushes. Zhao Ke sniffed and suddenly felt a familiar foul smell, causing his body to stiffen. Abruptly, he looked up.
In the bushes, a pair of crimson eyes were staring at him.
"Roar!"
Zhao Ke's face froze, and he instinctively stepped back. A sharp claw emerged from the bushes, carrying a strong smell of blood. In an instant, Zhao Ke even saw some dark red flesh clinging to the claw.
With a tearing sound in his ears, Zhao Ke rolled on the ground. When he lowered his head and looked, he saw that his clothes had been torn into strips, and his chest was burning with pain, blood oozing from four claw marks.
Seeing this, a chill ran through Zhao Ke's heart. If he had been a step slower, he might have been disemboweled.
Looking again, Bear Two emerged from the bushes, its black and shiny fur, crimson eyes staring at him. The most eerie thing was the human-like grin on the bear's face.
"You damned thing! Won't you just go away?"
Qi Liang raised the axe in front of his chest, blocking Zhao Ke's path, and urged him in a low voice, "I'll hold him back. You go, if you can run, just run. Every man for himself."
"Do you think I can outrun this guy?"
Zhao Ke covered his chest with one hand, got up from the ground, and a bitter smile appeared on his thin face.
"But anything's better than waiting to die, right? Didn't you say you believed in me? Well, this is the result of me believing in you!"
Qi Liang turned his head and gave Zhao Ke a fierce glare, indicating that he should leave quickly.
Hearing Qi Liang's shout, Zhao Ke's gaze gradually deepened. Gripping the heavy dagger, Zhao Ke held it in a reverse grip in his palm, his expression neither smiling nor angry, and said coldly, "You really are a good-for-nothing."
"You!"
Having tried to help, Qi Liang was being called a good-for-nothing by Zhao Ke, leaving him speechless and his face flushed red with anger.
Ignoring Qi Liang's frustration, Zhao Ke looked at Bear Two, slightly bent his legs, and sneered, "What's wrong? Do you like the taste of your mother's meat? It's a bit tough, though."
"Roar!"
Before Zhao Ke could finish his words, Bear Two's eyes turned red, and it lunged at Zhao Ke and Qi Liang. The huge body, with its intimidating presence, made one feel suffocated.
Qi Liang's face turned pale, his muscles stiffening, his breath held. Watching the looming figure in front of him, a chill ran through him, as if a snake was crawling up his spine, making him feel like his scalp was about to explode.
"It's over!"
This was Qi Liang's last thought.
"Dodge!"
At this moment, Zhao Ke's shout sounded in Qi Liang's ear. Before he could understand what was happening, Zhao Ke kicked him in the back, sending Qi Liang flying out, while he himself leaped aside.
"Bang! Ah..."
Accompanied by a scream and a rumble, a pit with a diameter of about three meters appeared behind Zhao Ke and Qi Liang. Zhao Ke got up, walked to the edge of the pit, and saw sharpened bamboo spears standing upright inside. Bear Two had fallen into it headfirst, turning its head and body into a hornet's nest.
However, what surprised Zhao Ke was not Bear Two, but the two people beneath the pit.
