CHAPTER5

ELENA’S POV I stood, awaiting my impending death. Only for it to be replaced with a painful howl from the bear. My eyes snapped open to see a tall figure standing in front of me. Akin to a ancient warrior, he stood. A long sword in his hands. Facing the now one- armed bear with an indifferent gaze. Roar The bear let out, its spittle flying everywhere as it charged at him once more. My figure completely insignificant to it. “Watch out!” I let out, but my fears were unfounded as the mysterious savior sidestepped the bear. It’s remaining claw missing his head by merely a beat as he brought his sword down on its nape in one fluid motion. I stood, petrified as I watched the headless bear stumble a few steps before crumpling down on the ground. It’s decapitated head rolling towards me. I looked down, instantly regretting my actions as I made eye contact with its angry yet despairing gaze. I hunched over, bile rising in my throat as I retched. I emptied out my already empty stomach before I stood erect. Swaying slightly as my sense of balance was suddenly impaired. I adjusted my figure, before turning to look at the figure that was indifferently cleaning his bloody sword. Bike threatened to rise as the bloody stench made its way to my nose. I suppressed the urge as I wobbled towards him. Careful not to touch the carcass. I wasn’t sure who he was or why he saved my life but I had to thank him all the same. And maybe ask where he got the sword from. I stood opposite him, stunned as I took in his features. The moonlight reflected off of him bathing his silky black hair in a silvery sheen. His black eyes were like deep pools of unfathomable depths. His black bodysuit had been ripped off at his shoulders, exposing his well built arms. He was like a Greek God. A dark haired Adonis. “T-thank you for saving my life,” I blurted out after regaining my bearing. Throwing my gaze elsewhere, trying to call the restless beat of my heart. I placed a hand on my chest. Angry that this was caused simply by looking at him. I didn’t need a mirror to know my cheeks would be like ripe tomatoes. “You,” he said and my breath got hitched in my throat as I hung on his word. “were in my way,” he finished. I blanked. Too stunned to fawn over his deep, velvety voice. I teared my gaze away from the bush next to him and faced him directly. “I was in your way?” I asked, quivering as I clenched my fists. Itching to wipe the indifferent look on his perfect face with my fist. I watched as he nodded. Obviously too lazy to bother with me any longer. And just like that, any good impression I had of him crumbled. He was just like the others. Selfish and self-absorbed. My gaze turned cynical as I let out, “Well sir. Forgive me for taking any more of your precious time,” I spat, giving him a mock bow before I turned in the opposite direction to leave. I trudged through the bloody mud, too angry to pay any attention as I just wanted to be far away from him. “There’s a mountain lion in that direction,” he said indifferently. Impassively, I turned around, passing him once more without a word as I now trudged in my new direction. “There’s another bear there,” he let out once again. His tone the same as ever. Indifferent. I stopped in my tracks. Too angry to ask for directions. Too scared to get myself killed. I wasn’t sure if he was being truthful but better safe than never. “Follow me and try not to get killed,” he said, walking off in another direction, not waiting to see if I was following. “Asshole,” I let out through gritted teeth as I followed behind him. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the fact that he saved me, or because I truly did not have any other option, I followed behind him without a single word. We moved through the forest. His steps light and barely audible while mine were very much loud. I continued forward, flabbergasted as to how much of an expert he looked considering we’ve both been here only an hour at best. I tried to mimic his steps. Anything to distract myself from the fact that I almost got my head taken off by a bear. A smile tugged at my lips as I felt like I was getting the hang of it. Only for my stomach to betray me. Loud and consistent. “We’re here,” he said. If he heard the grumble he didn’t say anything and for once, I was grateful for his pompous attitude. I watched as he stepped into a dark cave. I stood at the entrance. Swallowing the fears that threatened to creep up. “No other choice Elena,” I muttered with gritted teeth as I stepped inside. I moved slowly through the darkness, calling out, “Hello? Mysterious stranger?” but it was to no avail as I was merely gifted with my own echo. “Stranger?” I called out once again. Panic seeping into my tone as my steps increased until I broke out into a full on run. My chest heaved as I ran as though something was chasing me. With the darkness, I couldn’t be sure I was alone. Despair flashed across my gaze as I felt things move in the darkness but I continued on. Hope flared as I saw a dim light at the end of the tunnel. I moved with an increased speed, the light getting brighter as a smile started to bloom on my face. The slight smile that bloomed was quickly erased as I saw the pompous figure standing directly in front of the light. “You bastard!” I yelled, before crashing right into him, all before I realized he was standing on a cliff. And just like that, we fell into the bright blue light that illuminated our figures. Despair flared once again within me, but I couldn’t suppress the wild satisfaction that accompanied it as I saw the surprised look on his perfect face as we fell to our doom.
