CHAPTER TWO

1141 Words
JANICE POV Mates…I grew up disliking this word. Don't get me wrong and no, I'm not trying to get the Moon goddess angry but I always felt this concept is useless. Why would I feel a connection with someone I just met and I don't even know anything about? To prove my point my mom's story of meeting her mate, my dad had to be the most meaningless story I've heard because what? They are the most mismatched couples ever. My personal opinion though. "Janice!" My mother screamed. Yes, she screamed. My poor ears, I'll go deaf one of these days. I went down the stairs, to see her standing by the kitchen door already dressed. f**k I forgot. " Oh, Mom, I forgot. I'm going to be dressed in a jiffy." I said smiling to ease off her anger. "You better do, young lady." I rushed back to my room and slammed the door, not wanting to hear what else she had to say. Nonchalantly, I opened my wardrobe; my eyes scanning through my clothes. If only I was allowed to stay home, I had the Witcher series I wanted to binge-watch this evening. I should be used to this though, things never happened the way I wanted them to. My mirror fell as if confirming my thoughts. "Janice, you better get down here if you don't want to be whooped." my dad growled. That was my warning to rush out of the room. That man was a ticking bomb and I wanted no problem with him. Due to my disorganization, I only wore one piece of my earring but my mom; my everyday rescuer, had an extra set in the car. She was always ready to help her baby girl. Evelyn Carter, my lovely mother. The universal mother of all the pups in the pack. Always putting others before her. My mum always reminded me of Chihuahua sometimes, a short cute lady with short curly hair. She also had the attributes of this dog, very cute but with a short temper. I still loved her. I counted it an achievement that she is my mother. That will be number one on my achievement list because I had no achievements. However, my dad Jules is another ball game. A very tall (about 6'7 inches) and well-structured man. Is it wrong if I call him the direct opposite of my mom? My dad and I had no similar features and I wondered most times if he was my dad. Yeah, the thought often crossed my mind. I'm quite short like my mother with shoulder-length hair which turned into a bob by itself. I reserved some resentments for my dad and I felt it was mutual because we shared no connection like the rest of my siblings. I was the odd one in the family. I was known as the low-beat for a beta's daughter. As a Beta's daughter, I was expected to be at the top of my grades; most athletic, and very social amongst other demands. I was none of these. I had the lowest grades in my set, the worst pup in training and I had to have zero percent in organizational skills. I was the clumsiest child in the pack. Add that as number two in my list of achievements. The clicking of the glass cup by Alpha Xavier brought me back to this boring event. With the permanent frown on my face, it was quite evident that I didn't want to be here. I felt my presence was not needed here and I saw this whole gathering as a big fuss. You're wondering what the event is about? Well, Alpha Todd of the Tsuna Blood pack is to arrive at my pack today. My Alpha then decided to invite all influential wolves; ranging from the Beta, and Gamma to other high-ranking pack warriors to the gathering to welcome Alpha Todd. To me, technically this was not your typical welcome. Alpha Xavier just wanted to boast about his warriors to the visiting Alpha. Talk about Alpha's ego. In retrospect, this visit was rare. All the packs in both the Southern and Northern Clan minded their business and there were hardly any interactions between packs. There was peace and order between the packs because they only minded their pack's business and war occasionally broke out due to a breach of this silent rule. So it brought shock and also a torrent of fear in the minds of all the pack members when a letter was sent to our Alpha by Alpha Todd. This emotion was felt through the mind link we werewolves share in the pack. I had to block their chatter from my mind to have some silence and peace of mind. My weirdness was quite evident in this period because rather than being scared, I was curious. I couldn't pinpoint the reason for my curiosity. His appearance better be worth it. Just as they announced the arrival of Alpha Todd, I became so uneasy. I felt like puking and easing myself at the same time. I tried to hold it but I couldn't. "Hey, Mom. I need to pee." " Does it have to be now, Janice." She probably saw my skin changing green and she excused me. I quickly stood up, not before I met the glare of my dad. If looks could kill, I'd be dead. I hit Aunty Maria, the head chef of the pack on my way out because of my dad's stupid glare. They'll surely say it's my clumsiness. On reaching the restroom, I looked at my plain, fifteen-year-old self in the mirror. I wouldn't pass out as pretty, cute, or whatever they grade a girl on appearance. The only feature that drew people to me was my freckles. I loved them before, not until Maria and her clique had to insult it and trample the last hold I had of my self-esteem. "Imagine if he's my mate, he has to be! He has to be. I deserve it, don't you think?" The squeaky voice of Maria echoed in the restroom. Speak of the devil and she appears, like why? "Yes, you do." Her foolish minions, Stella and Stephanie encouraged her on. Please, how are they the smartest? Intelligence is not about academics. Getting irritated by their discussion, I leave the restroom. On coming outside, a strong scent slaps me. The scent of strong musk, intertwined with the alluring scent of cinnamon and clove. The anticipated Alpha stood in all his grace and glory. He stood so tall, a few inches taller than Alpha Xavier. All of a sudden, he met my eyes. He accessed me the way I was accessing him. This illusion I was in, was disrupted immediately he growled, "Mate!" Everybody in the room gasped in shock. Sorry, who?
