Zyra didn’t sleep. She didn’t even try. The message kept replaying in her head He’s lying. He didn’t find you I did. Her fingers hovered over her phone, debating whether to trace the number, but something always stopped her. Instinct. Whoever sent that message wanted her to know they were watching, and that was worse than not knowing at all. Zyra exhaled slowly and stood, pacing the room. Half her equipment was gone, the rest dismantled. She didn’t trust anything anymore not after last night. Not after him. Kael Dravenyx. Even thinking his name felt dangerous.
Focus. Step one: disappear. Step two: rebuild. Step three: find out who thought they could play with her. Simple. Except it wasn’t.
A shadow moved outside her window.
Zyra froze. Slowly, silently, she reached under the table and pulled out a handgun, her grip steady. The shadow didn’t move again too still, too deliberate. “Bad choice,” she murmured. She moved fast, yanked the window open, gun raised Nothing.
Just rain Empty street.
Her jaw tightened. “Someone’s playing games.”Her phone buzzed again. This time she checked immediately.
Unknown number: You should leave. Now Zyra scoffed. “Or what?”The lights went out Again.
A loud crack echoed from the hallway then footsteps. Multiple. Heavy. Coming closer.
Zyra didn’t wait. She grabbed her bag, slipped the gun into her waistband, and moved for the back exit. Fast. Silent. Controlled. Another crack her front door breaking this time.
They were inside.
“Too slow,” she whispered.
She slipped into the stairwell and ran down two flights then stopped.
Footsteps below More of them. She was boxed in.
Zyra cursed under her breath. “New plan.”
She turned and sprinted up instead, heading straight for the rooftop. Rain hit her hard as she pushed the door open, wind whipping around her. The city stretched wide and dark, glowing under neon reflections No time.
The rooftop door burst open behind her.Three men stepped out. All in black. Weapons raised. Not amateurs.
“Drop the bag,” one of them ordered.
Zyra smirked. “Make me.”
She moved first. Gun up shot fired. One man dropped instantly. She rolled behind cover as bullets tore through the air, her heart pounding but her mind calm. Two left. They split up smart. Zyra exhaled slowly, then ran straight toward the edge.
“What the” one of them started.
Too late.
She jumped.
The drop was hard, pain shooting through her legs, but she didn’t stop. She kept running, leaping across rooftops, moving fast, not looking back Until someone stepped directly into her path.
Zyra skidded to a stop.
Kael Standing there like he had been waiting all along.
Of course he had.
Rain soaked his shirt, clinging to him, but he looked completely unaffected. Untouchable. In control.
“Going somewhere?” he asked calmly.Zyra raised her gun instantly. “Move.”
He didn’t.
“Don’t test me.”
“You won’t shoot,” he said. Her lips curled. “Try me.”
Silence stretched between them, rain pouring down. Then he stepped forward.Zyra fired.
The shot rang out but he was already moving. The bullet missed. His hand caught her wrist, twisting just enough to knock the gun from her grip. It hit the ground with a sharp sound.
Zyra swung at him he blocked, pulled her in, pinned her Close.
Too close.
“Enough,” he said quietly.
“Let me go.”
“No.”Her anger flared. “Those men did you send them?”
“No.“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he looked past her and frowned slightly.Zyra followed his gaze. The two remaining men had reached the rooftop edge Still coming.
“Persistent,” Kael murmured.
“Handle your problem,” Zyra snapped.
“They’re not mine,” he said calmly. “They’re yours.”Her stomach tightened. “What?”
Before she could think Gunshots rang out But not from the men.
From somewhere else.
Both men dropped instantly.
Zyra froze. “What the hell“Sniper,” Kael said.
“Yours?”
“No.”That was worse Much worse. He released her slowly. They both scanned the surrounding buildings.Nothing,No movement,No sign.
Zyra’s phone buzzed.She checked it.You’re welcome,Her grip tightened.
“Who is that?” Kael asked. She looked up. “I was about to ask you.”
Silence fell between them, heavy and uncertain. For the first time, Kael didn’t look completely in control just slightly off.
“What do you want from me?” she asked.
“To keep you alive.”She laughed. “You’re doing a terrible job.“Come with me.”
“No’’You don’t have a choice.
“I always have a choice.”
He stepped closer. “Then choose carefully.”
Zyra hesitated and she hated that. But she didn’t know who was after her, who was watching, or who had just taken out trained men like nothing. Kael was dangerous but at least he was visible.
Predictable.
In his own way.She exhaled sharply. “Fine.”
His eyes darkened slightly. “Good.”
“But this is strategy,” she added. “Not loyalty.”I wouldn’t expect anything else.A helicopter descended above them.Zyra looked up. “Of course.”
Kael stepped forward and held out his hand. She stared at it for a second, then took it. Just this once.
Inside the helicopter was luxury silent, controlled, untouched.Zyra sat, watching him carefully. “Now what?”Kael slid a tablet toward her.
A contract Her eyes scanned quickly exclusive work, no escape, no betrayal.Severe consequences.
“You’re serious?” she asked.Very She laughed. “You think I’m signing this?”
“I think you will.”
“Why?”He didn’t answer. Instead, he dropped a file in front of her.
Zyra opened it and froze,Photos,Records,Names.
Her entire past Exposed.
“That’s impossible “Nothing about me is,” Kael said calmly.
Zyra looked up slowly. “You’ve been watching me.”
“For a long time.”Her stomach dropped. “How long?”
He held her gaze. “Since before you knew who you were.Something about that felt wrong.
“What does that mean?” she asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Sign it.”Zyra stared at the contract. Her options were closing in fast. She hated this But she wasn’t stupid. So instead. She picked up the pen.
“You better be worth it,” she muttered. Then she signed.Kael took the tablet back. “Welcome to Vanta.”
Zyra leaned back slowly. Something about that didn’t feel like a beginning. It felt like a trap closing. Her phone buzzed again. She checked it.You just made the biggest mistake of your life.Zyra looked up sharply Kael was already watching her.And this time He was smiling.
Her phone buzzed again.Another message. She opened it and froze.
A photo of her Inside the helicopter Taken from outside.
From the air Her heart stopped.
Then she read the message:
“You’re not just in his game now, you’re in mine too.”
