Chapter Six“I swear somebody's been at my kitchen,” Cook complained. “What do you mean?” Mother looked up from the table around which we sat. “Stealing,” Cook said. “I have lost bread, meal, bacon,” she spread her arms wide. “Somebody has stolen them.” “Stolen them?” Mother repeated. “I know what is in my kitchen,” Cook said. “I know what I use and what I should have.” “Who would do such a thing?” Mother looked at me in genuine shock. “Surely not one of the servants.” I saw Agnes stiffen.
