The party ended in laughter, photos, and promises of “we’ll keep in touch.” For Abike, though, something had shifted — not just between her and Glory, but within her.
The next week felt lighter.
No more second-guessing texts. No more awkward glances. No more hoping Glory would come back as the old best friend she once knew. Abike had finally closed that chapter.
But as life would have it, things didn’t stay quiet for long.
One evening, Abike received a message.
*From Glory:*
*"I know I have no right to ask this… but can we talk?"*
Abike stared at the screen. She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t even excited. Just… calm.
She replied simply:
*“About what?”*
Glory responded,
*“I want to explain everything. What really happened. And why I changed.”*
After a short pause, Abike replied:
*“Okay. Tomorrow after class. Just talk. No drama.”*
The next day, they met in a quiet corner of the school field. It wasn’t like old times — they didn’t laugh or hug. They just sat.
Glory began, “Abike, I know I hurt you. I got caught up trying to please someone new. I thought if I showed I had other friends, I’d look stronger… cooler.”
Abike remained silent, letting her talk.“But that new friend… it was all fake. She used me. She turned me against you. And I let her. That’s on me.”
Abike asked, “So when you accused me of being the fake one, you didn’t mean it?”
“I was projecting,” Glory said quietly. “You were the real one all along.”
Abike breathed in deeply. “You broke my trust, Glory. But I’m no longer bitter. I’ve grown.”
Glory nodded slowly. “I don’t expect things to go back to normal. I just wanted to say sorry. Genuinely.”
Abike looked at her, calm and steady. “Thank you. And I accept your apology. But we’re not going back. We’re moving forward — separately.”
Glory’s eyes dropped, but she nodded. “I understand.”
They stood.
No more grudge. No more guilt.
Just closure.
As Abike walked away, Mufidat waved from afar. Her *real* friend. Her new beginning.
Abike smiled. She had lost something once, but gained something far more valuable: wisdom, strength, and a heart that knew its worth.
