Chapter 1 Faster! I have to get away as fast as possible! I cannot let them catch me. I can hear thundering footsteps behind me. I push myself to run faster. They are getting closer, I won't make it. I keep running as fast as I can. If they catch me I will not survive. If they catch me they will take me to the most feared man known in the supernatural world. I do not want to face him. I have never met him, but I have heard many terrifying stories about him. I push myself to run even harder, knowing that if I do not make it, I am done for. I stumble and fall, but I am able to pick myself up and keep running. I take a deep breath and keep going. I can feel my heart pounding in my chest and my lungs aching with the effort. I ignore the fear and push myself to keep going. He comes to our pack every year. Everyone fears him and he knows it. When he arrives, he stays for a day. When he visits the Alpha gathers all the unmated females 18 and older in the pack house. We are told that the ruthless man we all fear travels to every pack to find his mate. This has happened for 5 years now, but he still has not found his mate. In the past I was safe, but this year is different. I turned 18 last week. My parents keep telling me to relax. Which does not reassure me as they do not care about me or what happens to me. I am a twin, but my brother died during our birth. As long as I can remember I have been blamed for his death. After that my mother could not conceive any other children. My parents call me the cursed child. I keep running, trying to make a plan. I have no place to go, no money, I will not survive as a rogue. Taking a deep sigh, I stop. I doubt he is my mate anyways. I ran out of fear of the unknown. I look around, trying to decide what to do. I take a deep breath and realize that I have no choice but to go back home. Once I stop I can hear that the thundering footsteps behind me have slowed down. I turn around to face those chasing me. As I turn around, I see the scout leader stepping forward. Before I can say anything I feel my wolf perk up and peer out through my eyes. “Mate,” she calls out to me. “Why did you run?” The lead scout asks me. “I fear the man you follow. I know he is a Lycan and not a werewolf. It has been said that he beats and rapes women just because he can. Also told that he burned whole packs to the ground to gain more land and power. Even though he is the prince, he is power hungry. As an 18 year old girl, that is some terrifying information to know when you may be the mate of that monster.” I explain to him. I watch him smile. “Let’s get you back to your Alpha,” he tells me as he turns back in the direction of the pack house. I nod my head in agreement, my heart racing as I begin the walk back to the pack house. I know that I have to make a decision soon, but I'm not sure what the right one is. I'm scared and confused, but I'm determined to find out the truth. I sigh as I try to think of what to say to my mate. Does he feel the mate pull like I do? My wolf hasn’t said anything to me since she called him our mate. I take another deep breath. “So what is your name?" I ask him. He looks down at me with a knowing smirk. “Does it matter?” He asks. “I guess not,” I mutter under my breath. I stay silent the rest of the way back to the pack house. As soon as we walk into the packhouse, I feel a slap across my face. Once my vision clears, I see my mother standing in front of me. “You ungrateful child! All you had to do was come to the packhouse with the other unmated girls to see if you were the mate of that monster or not!” She yells at me. I swear I hear a low growl from the lead scout standing next to me. What is his problem? I wonder to myself. I shake my head as I stare at my mother. She doesn't seem to notice. She looks around, her eyes narrowing as she tries to make out the source of the noise. She takes a step forward, her eyes fixed on the lead scout. I hear a door open and see my Alpha walking in. I lower my gaze and give him a small bow. “Ahh, Chloe, I see that you have decided to finally join us.” Alpha Kain says to me with a smirk. “Yes Sir, I am sorry for running off. I accept any punishment that you deem appropriate for me. I know I disobeyed an Alpha order.” I say to him keeping my head down. “Well Val has already seen all the other girls and they are not his mate. You are the last one.” Alpha Kain says to me while looking at the man standing next to me. “She comes with me,” the lead scout says plainly. “Who do you think you are? You cannot demand that I go with you. I have to speak to Val so that he can determine if I am his mate or not.” I yell at him. He smirks as he looks down at me. “I forgot that I had not introduced myself yet. My name is Val and I am the lycan prince.” He says to me. I gasp in shock. I watch as my mother's face turns pale as she realizes that she spoke poorly of the prince to his face. “I am so sorry,” she says in a panic but Val stops her. “You will keep your mouth shut. I do not care to hear your apology.” He tells her with a growl. “Why me?" I say outloud to myself. But with our supernatural abilities everyone heard me. “I know you know we are mates. I watched your wolf surface and then disappear as she realized who and what I am.” Val says to me. “Why do you want a mate anyway? And why me? I already explained to you my knowledge of you and my fears. I will never be your mate. You are a monster,” I say with tears in my eyes. “Oh you have no idea who I truly am.” He tells me as he grabs my hand and pulls me towards the exit of the packhouse. Once outside I see a few vehicles parked with some very large men standing next to them. They watch Val as he pulls me towards the front vehicle and places me inside the back seat. I watch him walk away after closing the door. I look up and see a driver in the front seat. “Where is he going?” I ask him. However he does not answer me. He doesn't even turn to look at me. So I just sit in silence. About 20 minutes pass before I see Val walking back to the vehicle I am sitting in. He opens the front passenger door and climbs in. He looks back over his shoulder at me with a terrifying smile on his face. I was terrified. I locked my gaze on the road, afraid to look him in the eyes. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as we drove away from the pack house. I lance at him out of the corner of my eye. He notices and smiles. “Welcome to your greatest nightmare.” He tells me with a smirk and a wink.
