Chapter 6 - Fire In The Bones

1160 Words
The Magnolia estate burned like a wounded beast—roaring, collapsing, spitting embers into the night sky. Smoke flooded the once-elegant halls, mixing with the stench of gunpowder. Shouts echoed from every direction as Magnolia guards scrambled to contain the chaos. Adrian didn’t look back. Seraphine pulled him forward with brutal urgency, her grip like iron. “Down the stairwell,” she ordered. “The main hall is compromised.” Marco sprinted beside them. “Half the estate is on fire! How the hell did they get in?” “They were already inside,” Seraphine said—voice cutting through the smoke. “They’ve been waiting.” That sent a cold shiver crawling down Adrian’s spine. “Someone in your circle opened the gates,” she added. “Someone with real authority.” Marco swore under his breath. “If I get my hands on that traitor—” The stairwell shook violently. A grenade exploded below them. The blast ripped open the marble steps, sending shards flying. Adrian grabbed the railing just in time. Marco shielded him with his body while Seraphine dove backward, landing with impossible grace. “Move!” she barked, coughing through the dust. They stumbled into the servant’s corridor—a narrow, dimly lit passage once used for deliveries. The air was thick, hot, suffocating. Another explosion thundered from above. Adrian stopped. “This isn’t a simple attack,” he said. “They don’t want to kill me. They want to wipe the entire Syndicate off the map.” Seraphine turned sharply. “That’s exactly what they want. And if you die now, the Magnolia bloodline dies with you.” Marco steadied Adrian. “Then we keep moving. We regroup at the safehouse.” Seraphine shook her head immediately. “No safehouses. All compromised.” Marco’s eyes narrowed. “How do you know?” “Because,” she said quietly, “I helped build the network your traitor is using.” Marco stared at her like she had just betrayed them again. “Oh, that’s just great.” Adrian cut in. “We’re not debating this. We move.” They reached a dead end—a rusted steel door leading to the old wine vault. Seraphine kneeled and slid a thin blade into the lock. Sparks flickered. Marco grumbled. “You pick locks too?” She didn’t look up. “I break necks better.” The door clicked unlocked. They slipped into the vault, closing the heavy door behind them. The explosions outside were muffled now, replaced by an eerie, suffocating silence. Seraphine scanned the room quickly. “This vault connects to the underground tunnels. Your father used them more than you know.” Adrian clenched his jaw. “My father kept too many secrets.” Seraphine didn’t argue. She pressed a brick on the wall. A hidden panel slid open. A metal ladder descended into darkness. Marco eyed it warily. “Great. A creepy hole into the unknown. Just what we needed.” Seraphine went first. Adrian followed. Marco muttered curses but climbed after them. --- THE UNDERGROUND The tunnel below was cold and narrow—old stone walls dripping with moisture. Flickering bulbs cast weak pools of light. Adrian’s voice echoed softly. “You knew about this place?” Seraphine nodded. “The Vipers monitored every escape route the Magnolia Syndicate had. Your father had dozens.” Marco scoffed. “And why exactly are you helping us again?” Seraphine didn’t answer immediately. Her steps slowed. Her shadow stretched long behind her like a second figure—thin, sharp, dangerous. “I owe Adrian,” she finally said. Adrian frowned. “For what?” She hesitated. But before she could explain, a voice echoed through the tunnel: “Going somewhere, Boss?” They spun around. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness behind them—smirking, armed, and painfully familiar. Adrian’s heart stopped. Lorenzo Gallo. One of his father’s most trusted captains. His childhood mentor. Marco reacted first. “Lorenzo? What the hell—” Lorenzo raised his gun. “Drop your weapons.” Seraphine’s daggers flashed into her hands instantly. Adrian stepped forward. “Lorenzo… you did this?” Lorenzo’s smile twisted. “You were never meant to take your father’s throne, Adrian.” Marco growled, “You bastard. You betrayed us—” Lorenzo’s gaze hardened. “I didn’t betray the Syndicate. Your father betrayed me.” Seraphine tensed beside Adrian. “We don’t have time for this,” she warned. But Lorenzo ignored her. He looked directly at Adrian—eyes burning with a decade of resentment. “Your father promised I’d inherit the Magnolia throne. Then you came along—and ruined everything.” Adrian’s stomach dropped. Seraphine whispered, “This is how it starts. This is the man I saw.” Lorenzo c****d his gun. “Goodbye, Adrian.” He pulled the trigger— A shot fired— But Seraphine moved faster. Her body crashed into Adrian, knocking him down. The bullet tore past her shoulder, splintering stone. Marco screamed, “Seraphine!” She didn’t stop. She launched forward— Two knives spinning through the air. Lorenzo ducked—one blade grazed his cheek, the other embedding in the tunnel wall. He fired again, grazing her thigh. Adrian’s blood turned to ice. “Seraphine!” She looked over her shoulder—eyes fierce, voice steady. “Run.” Adrian shook his head. “I’m not leaving you.” “GO!” she snarled. “This is my fight!” Lorenzo charged. Marco dragged Adrian back. “We have to move! Now!” Seraphine grabbed the last knife on her belt, her silhouette framed in the dim tunnel light—a lone assassin facing a man who wanted a dynasty to burn. Adrian’s chest ached with something raw and unfamiliar. Fear. Not for himself. For her. --- THE FIGHT BEGINS Lorenzo lunged. Seraphine ducked low, slashing at his leg. He staggered but swung his gun like a club, catching her jaw. She stumbled. Adrian tried to rush forward, but Marco held him back. “No, Adrian! She’s buying us time!” Seraphine wiped blood from her lip and smiled—dangerous, deadly. “You’ll need to do better than that.” Lorenzo roared. “I’ll gut you, Viper trash!” She tilted her head, gaze cold. “Try.” They collided again— Her blades a blur, His strikes brutal and heavy. Adrian forced himself into the darkness of the tunnel, the sounds of combat echoing behind him—metal clashing, grunts, the thud of bodies slamming into stone. Every step felt like betrayal. Every echo felt like a countdown. Marco whispered, trembling with adrenaline, “She’s fighting for you, Adrian.” Adrian swallowed hard. “No… she’s fighting for revenge.” But deep inside, he couldn’t stop the truth from surfacing. She was fighting for him, too. And he didn’t know if she would survive it.
