CHAPTER TWO

The petite blonde girl sprawled on the ground in the middle of the road "Have I killed someone?" Ryan muttered to himself, he wouldn't bear to add the guilt to the record he already had, he stepped out of the sports car and rushed to see what the situation was. The blonde girl stood up hastily, packed up the spilled content of her bag and bowed lazily and staggered right back into the moving traffic, he grabbed her hand, drawing her back. "Ava" he called out and she froze on the spot. "Ava" he called out again and she turned around. "How do you know my name?" Ava asked, her lips trembling at the realisation of what would have happened to her if this stranger hadn't held her back. "Your name tag," he said, nodding to her direction. Ava felt ashamed, she hadn't even removed her name tag yet. "Who are you"? She asked, removing the name tag. "My name is Ryan" he replied taking off his sunglasses, his long dark hair and sharp jawline complimented his black leather jacket and jeans making him look like a rockstar. "Let me take you to the hospital" Ryan said gesturing at her feet "You're bleeding" his hazel eyes twinkled in the sunlight as he put an arm around her. Ava's cheek flushed, he was a total stranger she stayed still and walked into his car, maybe this handsome man was mother nature's way of apologising to her for a bad day. "So where were you going barefooted?" Ryan asked, getting behind the wheel. Where was she even going, she hadn't thought of that. "Nowhere" Ava replied. Ryan c****d an eyebrow glancing at her. "I just lost my job," Ava answered without being asked. "Ouch" Ryan said with a wry grin, "Losing your job stinks, but at least you don't have to wear that hideous uniform anymore, Your fashion sense will thank you!" Ava chuckled, she didn't imagine herself to be jobless and laughing "Well, at least I don't choose to wear a black jacket on a hot day," She said. Ryan, unfazed, replied with a wink, "Touché! But at least I got to look dashing while you looked like you were ready to clean the floors!" "I'd rather be comfortable than dashing any day. Besides, with your fashion sense, 'dashing' is a bit of a stretch!" Ava said, her heart doing a somersault, this man indeed dashing and she had just lied to herself. Ryan laughed and said "Ouch! That's below the belt! But since we're on the topic of fashion, perhaps I could offer you some tips?" Ava nodded, smiling widely. "Ok so we'll start with this basic invention called footwears, right after you see a doctor" Ryan said smiling back at her Ava didn't know how to tell this kind handsome stranger that her $7 heel broke on her way to work, so she kept it to herself. "So, you're offering to give me a fashion makeover. Does this come with the job, or is it just a friendly gesture?" Ava asked and Ryan responded with a sly smile, "Oh, I wouldn't call it a friendly gesture, per se. More like... professional courtesy, I'm going to an art exhibition right now and I would like you to be my plus one, we can talk about the job later, that's if you want to" Ryan added. Ava laughed, and nodded shyly. Her day had just taken an unexpected dramatic turn. "You have a nice laugh" Ryan said softly and Ava's cheek flushed. "Dada" a sound came from the back seat Ava turned around to see a toddler tugging at her curly blonde hair. Her eyes widened, she hadn't realised that someone else was in the car all the while. "It's just about time" Ryan's voice came again. "Trust you to sleep all the way to our date" he cooed at the little girl. Ava was dumbfounded, what was going on? "Sorry, Lily got clingy and decided to tag along" He apologised to Ava and parked the car right in front of a hospital. Ava thought it was kind of a stretch going to a hospital, to her it was nothing a couple band aids wouldn't fix but she said nothing, she would rather enjoy the company than go back to sobbing alone, besides she had nowhere to go, and he had made mention of a job. Ryan handed her an oversized Crocs from the back seat, "we'll get something better later" he said as he carried the little girl out of the car. "Can I hold her?" Ava asked, looking into her little blue eyes. "If she lets you" Ryan said and to his dismay, she didn't make a fuss when Ava carried her. "She likes you," Ryan said, smiling at Ava. Ava had a lot of questions, She wondered how a rich, young, handsome guy like Ryan was already saddled with a kid while his mates were out there flashing money in clubs and getting all the ladies they wanted. She felt a bit jealous, a lucky lady had already landed this one and she was yet to put her life in order. "Where's her mother?" She asked, regretting it almost immediately, it was none of her business anyway. "Died early last year… Cancer" Ryan replied coldly. Ava felt sorry for asking and said nothing else. He took her to the mall and got her a beautiful black dress and a pair of shoes, it's price tag on the dress alone was three months of her salary. She swallowed hard, there was no way she could afford it on her paycheck. They got back into the car and they drove down to the exhibition Ryan had talked about. Stepping into the hallway, the walls were covered with lots of paintings and weird looking setups, Ava was stunned. Lots of rich looking people plyed the hallway, champagne in hand and ready to spend a lot of money. "Trust Van Gogh to be late to his own exhibition, and not dressed in a suit" a middle aged Latino woman sneered at Ryan. "Sorry I ran into a little trouble" Ryan responded, kissing her lightly on the cheek. Ava knew she was the trouble and found it amusing but also wondered why he hadn't mentioned that the exhibition was his. He introduced her to the woman, her name was Melanie and she was the Curator. Ryan whisked her away to introduce her to more people but then, her phone rang "Hello, who is this" Ava asked "Ava, this is Ms Stuart the neighbour, your grandma just slumped, we are taking her to the hospital, please hurry" the voice said Ava quickly picked up her bag, and just like Cinderella at midnight, she panicked and ran out on her date, without an explanation and without any means to contact him.
