Days blended into nights as Nao refused to leave Aya's side. Their once vibrant sanctuary beneath the Sakura tree had been replaced by the sterile confines of the hospital room, where the gentle rustling of cherry blossoms was a distant memory. Nao's presence became a constant anchor amidst the uncertainty, a lifeline Aya clung to in the darkest moments. The once carefree days they spent laughing and teasing under the Sakura’s shade seemed like a lifetime ago, and now, the only light in Aya's life was the unwavering love that Nao showed her. "I'm scared, Nao," Aya admitted one evening, her voice barely above a whisper as she stared out the window at the fading light. The fear was palpable in her tone, her mind swirling with all the possibilities of what might come. "What if...?" "We'll face whatever comes together," Nao replied firmly, her voice steady despite the tremor in her heart. She couldn’t allow herself to break down—not when Aya needed her so much. She brushed a stray lock of hair from Aya's forehead, her touch gentle yet reassuring. "You're not alone in this, Aya. I'm right here." The sincerity in Nao’s voice brought tears to Aya's eyes. She was overwhelmed by the depth of Nao's devotion, the unyielding strength that had become her only comfort in this bleak reality. Reaching for Nao's hand, she intertwined their fingers, clinging to Nao as if she were the only thing keeping her afloat in the storm that threatened to engulf them both. Nao’s grip was firm, reassuring, a silent promise that she wasn’t going anywhere. Just then, the door to the hospital room swung open, and Haruka rushed in, her face a mask of fear and worry. The normally composed and gentle woman looked frazzled, her eyes wide with concern. "Aya! Are you okay!? I... I came to visit… I'm so worried, and I hear you're getting worse..." Haruka’s voice trembled, and it took all her strength to restrain herself from breaking down in tears. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Aya, this sweet girl she had come to love as if she were her own daughter. Aya, despite the weakness that had overtaken her body, mustered a small smile, though it was tinged with sadness. "Don't worry, Mom!" she replied, her voice dry and raspy from the constant coughing that plagued her. She tried to sound strong, but even she could hear the strain in her words. "Nao... Nao is with me, so no way I can lose to this dumb disease!" She squeezed Nao's hand hard, as if to draw strength from her. But the effort it took to speak so confidently left her breathless, and she coughed, the sound harsh and painful in the quiet room. Haruka’s heart twisted at the sight of Aya’s struggle. She quickly crossed the room and sat by Aya’s other side, gently placing her hand on top of theirs. "Oh, Aya," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "You’re so brave, but you don’t have to fight this alone. We’re both here for you. I’m here, Nao’s here—we won’t let you go through this by yourself." Aya’s smile faltered, and for a brief moment, her fear showed through the cracks in her brave facade. "No way I can... Right...?" Her voice wavered, the uncertainty in her words reflecting the deep-seated fear she had been trying to keep at bay. Haruka squeezed her hand gently, her expression filled with love and determination. "That’s right, Aya. We’re going to get through this together, all of us. You’re stronger than you know, and you’ve got the best support team anyone could ask for." Nao nodded, her eyes filled with resolve. "We won’t let this disease take you from us," she said, her voice steady and full of conviction. "We’ll find a way, Aya. We’ll do whatever it takes." Aya looked between Nao and Haruka, the two people she loved most in the world, and despite the fear gnawing at her insides, she felt a glimmer of hope. The road ahead was uncertain and frightening, but with Nao and Haruka by her side, she knew she could face it. They wouldn’t let her face it alone. Haruka stayed with them well into the night, sharing stories and memories to lift Aya’s spirits. She spoke of the Sakura tree, of the days they spent beneath its branches, and of the future they would share when Aya was well again. Her voice was soft, comforting, a reminder of the life and love that awaited them beyond the hospital walls. As the evening wore on, Aya’s eyes grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep, her hand still held tightly by Nao and Haruka. The two women exchanged a look of understanding and unspoken support, knowing they would need each other’s strength in the days to come. The battle wasn’t over, but as long as they stood together, there was hope. And that hope was enough to carry them through the darkest of nights.
