“NO FOREIGN OBJECTS allowed in there.” The officer informs before we drop our phones in a metal container. We then proceed to the interogation room where we find Ricco and three other officers.
Ricco scowls at me but I do not care. Before I would have cared but he killed all the compassion I had left for him.
I think back to the time when we met. I would have done everything and anything for him back then. Even covered up a crime of this nature.
We take a seat around the table at the command of the officers. I of course take a seat next to Isabella while the woman takes a seat next to Ricco. Salvatore on the other hand stands at the other end of the room.
I bet he is only here for his car. If his car were not involved in this whole fiasco he would not have come but who knows?
“I am sure you both were told that you do not need lawyers? But if at one point or the other you feel you need one, we can provide one or you can provide your own as Ricco has done in this case. Can we start?” The male officer looks around the room and receives several nods. He places a tape recorder on the table and presses the start button.
“We shall start with introductions. I am Damien Falcon. The detective responsible for this case.” He states before he looks to the officers in the room.
“I am officer Martinez. The female officer present at the crime scene.” The blonde officer steps forward. Then looks at her partner.
“I am officer Lombardi.” He states. “One of the male officers’ present at the crime scene.”
“I am Candle Williams — a lawyer by profession. The man beside me is my client — Ricco Esposito.” The woman introduces before all the stares land on Isabella and I.
“I am Isabella Roberts.”
“I am Carina. Carina Gonzalez.”
“Great. What do you do?”
“We are students.” I answer for Isabella and I.
“And Ricco? Is he a student too?”
“He is.” Candle confirms while Ricco remains quiet. I do not think I have heard him talk since the crime scene. Has he?
“Can I see the student IDs?” He questions before Ricco and I produce ours. I expect Isabella to do the same but she does not. The officer raises a brow at her.
“Oh. I left mine at the door.” She voices. The detective makes a quick phone call before the man who escorted us here — officer Smith — strolls into the room.
“You have her ID?”
Officer Smith searches the metal container before he does in fact produce an ID and hands it to Detective Damien. He checks it then remains silent for a moment before he speaks. “Officer Martinez. A word.”
The female officer and Detective Damien step out of the room for a while. The female officer does not come back in when Detective Damien does but I do not think much of it until Detective Damien words out an instruction — “Isabella Roberts. Please leave the room.”
Isabella looks scared and hesitant as she stands to leave. I squeeze her hand over the table in reassurance and soon after she leaves. Detective Damien turns to me. “Carina please provide a detailed account of what transpired from the accident to the death of the driver.”
“Isabella and I were from a local coffee shop and were headed back on campus. While at that an out-of-control bus appeared — more than prepared to hit me.”
“How come you did not hear the car?” Candle questions.
“I had air pods on as I walked backward onto the road.” I admit it to them. Heat rushes to my face as I feel all their stares on me. More so Salvatore who must think that I am weird and a hazard all the people around me.
“You realize that that is a serious offense? You risked YOUR own life and the life of two other people. What if Ricco were in that car. He would have died in the car like the driver did.” Candle lectures me but I do not fail to catch that last part.
“But the driver did not die in the car. What happened was when the driver saw me on the road he swerved his bus and it hit into the car Ricco had. That made Ricco mad so he stormed out of the car and beat the driver to death because he could not produce the €10000 needed to panel beat the dent on the car!”
“For what reason would Ricco demand €10000 from a poor man when Ricco can afford that €10000 himself? He makes that kind of cash in no more than 2 weeks. The proof of that lies in his bank account — his paycheck and his boss.”
The detective and officers stare at Salvatore for a split second. The detective does not even bother to ask Salvatore if it is true that he pays Ricco €100000 to driver him around. It is quite obvious. What is not obvious is what I am about to disclose to the officer.
“Despite the fact that Ricco makes that kind of cash he wastes it all on alcohol & drugs.” I make that known to the officers.
Candle chimes in. “Do you have proof of those allegations?”
“A blood test would be proof enough that he is a user.” I respond. Ricco remains calm in all of this and he is even calmer when he speaks for himself.
“A blood test is not needed. What is needed however is psychological evaluation for Carina. She is a psychopathic liar and she has lied in all this because I broke up with her.”
“No. I was the one who broke up with him because he became abusive.”
“Did you ever report the abuse to the police?” Candle questions.
“No.”
“Do you at least have proof?” Candle questions. I move the top down and show Candle and the officers the deep purple bruises on my neck.
“That is not proof. That is a result of her sick s****l kinks. She asked me to choke her and on some occasions she would even want me to spank her.” Ricco defends himself. The air becomes thick with tension before all the hot air rushes to me.
The room remains silent for a moment before the detective decides — “Our interogation room shall come to a pause until the video Isabella and Carina claimed to have recorded is retrieved from the broken phone. The retrieval process takes at least 48 hours.”
“What about the car?” Salvatore questions — arms crossed across his broad chest.
“Come with me.” Officer Lombardi speaks before both him and Salvatore leave the room.
“Ricco shall be kept behind bars for his protection of course.” Detective Damien concludes before he makes a phone call. Officer Smith strolls in a moment later and takes Ricco with him.
Candle leaves too until Detective Damien and I are left alone. “Can I leave?”
“Not until Officer Martinez questions you.” Detective Damien tells me and leaves. It feels like hours when he walks back in with Officer Martinez.
“Isabella said you lied.” Officer Martinez informs as she sits in front of me. She expects a reaction but I do not GIVE her more than a blank expression.
Not on purpose of course. I am tired and it reflects in the manner in which the words come out of me. “I did not lie and I do not why Isabella said that.”
“You think Isabella would say that about you?”
“No.”
“But you said that you do not know why Isabella said that which means she would say it if she had a reason to. Perhaps a reason you do not know about?”
“A reason like what?”
“You can find out for yourself. She is outside waiting.” Officer Martinez informs and I take that as reason to leave.
