GIVE ME A CHANCE

David’s P.O.V.   I had given the interview for the position of Martial Art Teacher in her college. The college committee was planning to start the martial art course in the college to teach self-defense to girls students. One of my friends who were also a member of the committee recommended me and after a formal interview with them, I got the appointment letter. I hid my appointment from her as I wanted to surprise her. This was also a reason; I stopped her to participate in an upcoming fight. She was going to lead the martial art team from the college in the Sports Meet.   When I reached the ground, I saw her standing with Jenny and…. With a boy? I was surprised. It was new to me. I wanted her to live her life like a normal teenager but she never interacted with anyone except Jenny. He was tall, masculine, and very handsome. Both were looking good together.   As soon as I reached near the Dean, I greeted him and shook hands with him. I looked towards the student and then our eyes met.  I saw her mouth wide open in shock. I smiled at her and she glared. I knew that I am gone as soon as I enter the home.   “Everyone…. Let’s welcome our new martial art coach…. David MacField”, Dean announced and everyone cheered. I passed a small smile to all of them while nodding my head towards them.   “Bethany Williams…. Is everything alright”, I heard one of the coaches standing behind the Dean asking something to one of the girls. She was pretty but her dressing was telling the other story. I looked at her and thanked God that my Steph is very very far from her.    I noticed a disgusting look on her face when she immediately changed the expression and replied with a fake smile, “Everything is fine Sir”.   “You should be careful about your action Bethany. Our college not only famous for its academic performances but also we are known for our moral values”, he said in a cold tone and I understood what happened. I didn’t like this girl at all.   She lowered down her head. Every student was looking at her. It looked like she was rich and held a reputation here. But I was grateful to the coach for backing me. He looked at me and I mouthed thank you to him and he mouthed sorry with an apologetic look. It was not his fault but his action touched my heart. My daughter was really in good hands.   The Dean cleared his throat and then looked towards Steph and that boy. He signaled them to come near us.   “Stephany, Noah, I want you two to work with Mr. MacField and help him to ready a team. If you two have any names in your mind then you can discuss with Mr. MacField”, he said and they both said yes sir in unison. So the boy is Noah Williams, the football team captain and heir of William’s chain of restaurants. They had branches all over the world.   “So everyone… that’s all for today. All the coaches and team captains will work together to form the final team. I wish all of you the best of very good luck for your selections and the competition”, The Dean dismissed them and then said to me, “Mr. MacField, let’s talk in my office”. I nodded in agreement and looked back to Steph. She was shooting daggers at me and I mischievously winked at her.   “Mr. MacField, I am sorry about the behavior of Bethany. She is a nice girl but spoiled by her parents. They are too busy in their lives that they never have time for their daughter. She is a very sweet child but didn’t know how to judge people. Anything she knows is money which she gets from her parents. So her criteria for judging people are money. I hope that you will not mind her behavior and will treat her like your daughter”, Dean said to me and I smiled and replied, “No need to say sorry Sir. I can understand. This is one the reputed college in the state and only rich student’s come here who didn’t know anything about how the world work outside their houses. She is my student and equal to my daughter”.   Dean was happy with my answer and we both entered his office. He gestured me to sit down on the chair and sat behind his desk on his chair.   “One more thing, Sir. You know that Stephany MacField is my daughter”, I said and he nodded. I continued, “She is a trained martial art coach also. No one in the college except her friend Jenny knows about this. So I request to keep this secret for a while. You know that she is kind of introvert and never likes having the attention”.   The Dean was surprised to know that Steph was a trained coach. His expressions were telling that he was impressed with what I say about her. “I must congratulate you on having a multi-talented daughter David. She is also good in her studies and deserves to be the best. I am considering your request. Please feel free to share anything you want with me”, he said to me with a smile on his face and I was thankful to him. Then we talked about some other matters related to Sports Meet and after some time, we bid our farewell to each other.   It was almost evening and I knew that Steph would have reached home by now. I prayed to God internally for my safety and then headed towards the home.   Stephany’s P.O.V.   Both me and Noah were sitting in a café sipping our coffee silently. I agreed with him coming for coffee. Dad was with the Dean and I wanted to distract myself. Dad hid being appointed as coach in my college from me. Above all, he winked at me mischievously. I was upset with him.   Noah cleared his throat and I looked towards him coming out of my trance. “Sorry. I zoned out”, I apologized to him and started drinking my remaining coffee again.   “It’s ok. I know that you don’t like talking much”, he said and I looked at him surprisingly. “Well… it looks like, you have done your homework”, I said while smiling and he answered me with a smile, “it’s not like that. I am watching you since your first day in college. You are introvert, and don’t like socializing”.   I nodded in agreement as it was true that my social life is nothing but zero. All I have is Jenny. He further said, “I don’t know Steph what is the reason behind the sadness you hide in your eyes. I just want to be your friend like Jenny. You don’t trust me right now and it’s ok with me. I never did anything for you to gain your trust”. I was shocked. He noticed the sadness hidden inside me. We were never so close. I hardly talked to him.   I didn’t say anything. He hesitantly raised his hand towards mine and I only saw him. I didn’t pull back my hand from the table and even didn’t stop him. I was just staring at him.   He put his hand on my hand and I shivered with this little contact with him. His hands were big and right now his palm was fully covering my hand. I felt that little softness of his hand. “I just want to assure you that you never regret the decision of being me as your friend. Just give me a chance to prove myself worthy for your friendship”, he said with hope in his eyes.   I was just staring at him blankly not knowing what to say.
