Chapter 9 – Sisters at War

449 Words
The door clicked shut as my parents left the penthouse with polite goodbyes and empty promises to “visit again soon.” Adrian disappeared into his study without a word, but not before giving me one last unreadable glance. He left me standing there, my heart pounding, knowing full well the real storm hadn’t passed yet. Because Elara hadn’t left. She lingered by the grand staircase, her heels clicking softly against the marble as she descended one step at a time. Her smirk cut through me like glass. “Alone at last,” she whispered. I stiffened. “Why are you here, Elara?” Her laugh was low, bitter. “Why? Because that seat at the table, that view from the balcony, that name on his lips—was supposed to be mine.” Her words slammed into me, heavy with venom. I forced myself to stand tall. “You walked away. You chose your lover. You left all of this behind.” Her eyes flared, sharp as fire. “I never walked away from Adrian. I walked away from the cage. The rules. The business deal our parents forced on me.” She took a step closer, her face twisting. “But him? He was always mine.” I shook my head, my hands trembling. “You never loved him.” Her lips curved into a cruel smile. “Love?” She spat the word. “Who cares about love? Adrian Kane is power. He’s control. He’s respect. Do you know what it feels like to be desired by a man like him? To be the woman everyone envies?” Her words dug deep, stirring something ugly in my chest. “You don’t belong in his world, Elena. You were always the quiet one, the shadow. No one even saw you unless I allowed it.” Her voice dropped, sharp as a knife. “And now you’re parading in my place like you earned it.” My throat burned. “I didn’t ask for this.” “But you took it,” she snapped, her eyes blazing. “You took my marriage, my ring, my life. And don’t think for a second Adrian won’t see the truth. He was supposed to be mine. He still is.” Her words echoed in the silence, sharp and final. Then she leaned close, her eyes dark and dangerous. “Enjoy playing Mrs. Kane while you can, sister. Because when I take back what’s mine… he’ll never forgive you for the lie.” And with that, she turned and walked away, her heels clicking like a countdown. Each step she took was a promise. And I knew my time was running out.
