Chapter 6 – The Mask Cracks

386 Words
The penthouse was silent when we returned, but the silence was different this time. Heavy. Watching. Adrian removed his jacket with slow precision, hanging it over the chair, his back to me. My hands fidgeted with the clasp of my clutch, the echo of the luncheon still ringing in my ears. He finally turned, his eyes sharp, unreadable. “You surprised me today.” His voice was low, even, but dangerous. I swallowed hard. “Surprised you?” “You’ve never spoken like that before. Calm. Graceful. Almost…” His lips curved, though not kindly. “Almost genuine.” My chest tightened. If I breathed too loudly, he might hear the truth clawing inside me. “People change,” I whispered. Adrian’s steps were slow as he closed the space between us. He stopped so close I could feel the heat radiating from his body. His gaze pinned me in place. “No,” he said softly, his voice like steel wrapped in velvet. “People don’t change that quickly. Which leaves me with two possibilities.” My breath caught. “W-What possibilities?” His eyes darkened. “Either you’re hiding something… or you think you can play me.” His hand lifted suddenly, fingers brushing my cheek. The touch should have been tender, but it wasn’t. It was a warning dressed as affection. “Which is it, Elara?” he murmured. My heart hammered so violently I thought it might give me away. I forced a weak smile. “You think too much.” He studied me for a long moment, then stepped back, coldness settling over his features again. “I don’t play games. Remember that.” He moved past me, retreating into his study, the door shutting with a finality that made me sag against the wall in relief. But my relief didn’t last. Because as I glanced out the window, something caught my eye. A figure stood across the street, half-hidden in the shadows, watching the building. Watching me. My breath froze. Even from this distance, I knew the stance, the tilt of the chin, the shape of the shoulders. It wasn’t Adrian. It wasn’t anyone from his world. It was Elara’s secret lover. The man she abandoned everything for And now he knew I was living the life she left behind.
