Chapter 13: The First Victory

1235 Words
The WeiTech boardroom was quieter than usual that morning. Sunlight streamed through the towering glass walls, painting long golden lines across the polished table where the company’s top executives sat. Normally, meetings here were filled with confident discussions about profits, expansion, and power. Today, however, the atmosphere was heavy. No one was relaxed. Everyone knew about the leak. The news media had been talking about it all night, speculating about internal betrayal and corporate warfare. Investors were nervous, and WeiTech’s competitors were watching closely. At the head of the table sat Liang Wei. His posture was calm, his dark suit perfectly pressed, but his eyes were cold and calculating as they moved across the room. Beside him sat Zhang Mei. Unlike the previous meetings where she had been viewed as an outsider, today she looked completely composed. A stack of documents rested neatly in front of her, and her fingers tapped lightly on the table as if she was already several steps ahead of everyone else. Across the table, several executives avoided her gaze. They knew something was coming. Finally, Liang Wei spoke. “The purpose of this meeting,” he said calmly, “is to address the security breach that occurred yesterday.” A low murmur spread around the table. One of the senior directors cleared his throat. “President Liang, with all due respect, this situation is extremely sensitive. The media is already questioning WeiTech’s stability. If we handle this poorly” “We won’t,” Liang Wei interrupted. His tone made it clear the discussion wasn’t open for debate. He leaned back slightly and glanced at Zhang Mei. “Explain.” Every pair of eyes in the room shifted toward her. Zhang Mei slowly stood. The faint sound of her chair sliding back echoed in the silent room. “Yesterday,” she began calmly, “WeiTech experienced another leak of confidential information.” Several executives nodded. “We are aware,” one of them said impatiently. “Yes,” Zhang Mei replied, her voice steady. “But what you may not know is that the information leaked yesterday was intentionally fabricated.” Confusion instantly spread across the room. “Fabricated?” someone repeated. “What does that mean?” Zhang Mei folded her hands in front of her. “It means the project you all saw yesterday was never real.” The room erupted with murmurs. “You created a fake project?” an executive asked incredulously. Zhang Mei nodded. “It was a trap.” Several directors leaned forward. “A trap for what?” Zhang Mei’s gaze swept across the table slowly. “For the mole.” Silence followed. No one spoke. The tension in the room grew almost unbearable. Finally, someone laughed nervously. “That’s impossible. You can’t just assume someone here is leaking information.” Zhang Mei gave a small smile. “I didn’t assume.” She turned toward Huo Zhen. “Show them.” Huo Zhen tapped his tablet, and the large screen behind him lit up. Rows of data appeared. Login records. Message histories. Access times. The executives frowned as they studied the screen. “What are we looking at?” one asked. Zhang Mei stepped forward. “These are the access logs for the fake project files.” Her finger moved across the screen. “Only ten people in this room had permission to view them.” Several executives shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Zhang Mei continued calmly. “However, three individuals accessed the files repeatedly late last night and attempted to transmit the data outside the company network.” Gasps spread across the table. “That’s ridiculous,” someone muttered. Zhang Mei ignored the comment. Huo Zhen changed the screen again. Now a series of encrypted messages appeared. Communication between internal accounts and an external contact. A contact linked to Wang Xiao’s corporate network. The tension in the room snapped like a stretched wire. “Those communications were traced directly to one executive,” Zhang Mei said quietly. Several men stiffened. Liang Wei watched silently. His gaze was fixed on Zhang Mei, observing the calm authority in her voice. He had known she was intelligent. But this level of strategy… this level of control… It surprised him. Zhang Mei turned slowly. Her eyes landed on one man sitting halfway down the table. “Director Han.” The man froze. His face immediately turned pale. “You accessed the files twelve times last night,” Zhang Mei said. Director Han slammed his hand on the table. “That’s a lie!” His voice echoed across the room. “You fabricated those records!” Zhang Mei tilted her head slightly. “Did I fabricate the bank transfers too?” Huo Zhen tapped the tablet again. The screen changed. This time it displayed financial transactions. Millions of dollars moving through offshore accounts. Accounts linked to companies controlled by Wang Xiao. A wave of shocked whispers swept through the boardroom. Director Han’s breathing became uneven. “You don’t understand” Zhang Mei cut him off. “The money started arriving in your accounts three months ago.” Her eyes hardened. “Right around the time WeiTech’s internal information began leaking.” Director Han shot to his feet. “This is a setup!” Two security guards at the door immediately moved forward. Director Han looked around the room desperately. “You’re all making a mistake!” he shouted. But the board members were staring at him with expressions of shock and disgust. The evidence was overwhelming. Liang Wei finally spoke. “Remove him.” His voice was quiet. But it carried absolute authority. The guards grabbed Director Han’s arms. “No!” he shouted, struggling violently. “You can’t do this!” The guards tried to drag him toward the door, but he twisted and fought against them. His face was red with rage. “You idiots!” he screamed. “You think exposing me solves anything?!” The room fell silent again. Even the guards hesitated. Director Han’s eyes were wild now. “You think Wang Xiao is your biggest problem?!” he shouted. The guards tightened their grip, pulling him toward the door. But he shouted one last sentence before disappearing into the hallway. “You're already surrounded!” The doors slammed shut. The room was completely silent. No one moved. Several executives looked shaken. Others looked frightened. Because those words didn’t sound like the desperate cry of a caught traitor. They sounded like a warning. Finally, one director spoke quietly. “What… did he mean by that?” No one answered. Liang Wei slowly stood. His tall figure cast a long shadow across the table. “The investigation continues,” he said calmly. “Anyone else involved will be exposed.” The directors nodded quickly. None of them dared challenge him. Liang Wei turned toward Zhang Mei. For a moment, the two simply looked at each other. Something had changed. When they first married, he had viewed her as a temporary solution to a problem. A contract. A formality. But today… He had seen something else. A strategist. A woman capable of standing beside him in war. “You handled that well,” Liang Wei said quietly. Zhang Mei crossed her arms. “It was only the first step.” Liang Wei’s eyes darkened slightly. “Yes,” he said. “Only the first.”
