Chapter 24
Via the closing cave mouth, they could see a dimly lit landscape. Jo darted over to help Madeline untangle herself from a web of something that looked like saliva. As soon as Madeline was free from the web, Jo shouted, “Run!”
They didn’t need to. The hot air seemed to move inward then outward. The ground vibrated. There was the sound of something like a train approaching on loose tracks. Then a jet of hot air and water shot Madeline and Jo outside the cave. They rolled across the soft grassy ground then scrambled to their feet.
“Are you okay, Madeline?” Jo asked.
“Yes. You?”
“Still in one piece, I think. How did you get here?”
“In a capsule. Robert programmed it for me, and I set it to take me to where I sensed you were. Tadgh isn’t in there, is he?”
