Chapter 19

Dom woke me up the next morning. I quickly got up and went to the closet to get dressed. Today was going to be a busy day for me. “Let's go down to the kitchen and get breakfast and then we’ll head to the library to meet with your mom.” Dom said leading me out the hallway and down the stairs. In the kitchen, Viv and Nathan were sitting at the bar drinking coffee, a plate with a stack of pancakes lay in front of them. Dom poured me a glass of orange juice and I took a seat at the bar next to Viv. I took my vitamins and stole a couple pancakes off the stack. I ate quickly and put my dishes in the sink after rinsing them. I knew I needed to get this day started quickly but I took a moment to lean over Viv's shoulder and whisper in her ear, “I’m glad you’re here but you have a lot of explaining to do. You’re not off the hook.” She gave a quick nod of understanding and I headed off in search of mother and the library. “There is a lot you need to learn.” She handed me a stack of books as soon as I walked through the door. “You need to study these in your free time. Right now we need to get outside. We’re going to harness your powers and see what ya got. Best way to learn is hands on.” Mom led me out through the sun room and out to the massive back yard. She stood across from me. “The best way to call your power is through emotion. You have to feel it to wield it.” She was focusing on her hands. You could see it in her eyes. A purple haze was growing, her normally blue eyes began to shine purple. A purple ball of energy grew quickly in her hands. She threw her arms straight forward and released the energy out. It flew across the yard landing in the ground like a mine had exploded. “Your turn,” she said motioning me to her side. I put my hands together like she did hers. I focused on my hands trying to draw from my feelings. I unlocked the box inside me where I’d put all the hurt from Matti. I let the feelings of hurt, anger, and disappointment wash over me. A silver ball of energy started to form in my hands. I worked it over in my hands while pulling more emotion. I reached my arms out and sent the ball of energy toward an imaginary enemy. It hit the ground with such force it looked like a bomb had been dropped. I turned to her and she was just in shock. “I’ve never seen anyone harness that much energy at once. How do you feel?” “I feel okay.” I said turning to face her. “Let’s keep going.” She looked unsure but then she began again. “Let's try a fire ball.” She turned away and said something in another language. Minutes later a ball of fire formed in her steady hands. She tossed it forward and it created a ring of fire around us. She spoke in a foreign language again and the fire extinguished itself. “Now you try,” she said turning to me, “Call on the flame. Venite Ad Me Flamma.” I called on the flame. When I threw my fireball to the ground however it not only built a ring of fire around us it had turned it into a whole wall of fire. “Quickly, you have to put it out. Disseminabunt.” Mom said in an urgent tone. I repeated her and the flames disappeared. “You are more powerful than we could have ever believed. We need to do some more testing.” For the next couple hours I worked with my mom. I learned the basics and mom even taught me a few of her own spells. I was so exhausted that by lunch time I needed a nap. I went to the kitchen to grab some water and something to eat. My plan was to lay down after I ate but apparently the baby had other plans. I barely made it into the kitchen before I felt an overwhelming exhaustion followed by dizziness. I needed to sit down now. I tried to make my way to the nearest couch. I made it to the hallway outside the living room and everything went black as I felt myself spinning and falling. CHAPTER 20 I woke up in bed. It was dark out. Dom was sitting on the bed next to me. Matti was in a chair on the other side of the room. My mother and a man I hadn’t seen before were whispering over by the window. I wanted to sit up but my body felt so heavy. I looked over at Dom. “How are you feeling baby? You scared me half to death.” “I'm tired and my body feels like lead but I think I’m ok. What happened?” “Your use of your magic drained your energy supply, not uncommon for newbies, especially ones pregnant with an enchantress,” the unfamiliar man said. “This is Dr. Miaugi. He also lives on the grounds and he specializes in super naturals,” my mom stated. Dr. Miaugi turned to me, “I've done an examination and everything looks okay. When you use your magic its naturally draining. The more practice the longer your stamina, you see. However, it seems you’re able to tap into and use the enchantresses power as well. This is truly spectacular!” the short, plump, white-haired man said. “Luna is going to bring you by tomorrow so we can do an ultrasound as I understand you haven’t had one yet. For now, you need rest.” With those last words he was out the door and gone. Dom brought me some food and ran me a bath. I put on a pair of leggings and a Tshirt and snuggled back into bed. It was almost eleven pm. I had been out for hours but I was still exhausted. Dom gave me a famous body message and played with my hair as I told him about my practice with mom. I fell asleep in his arms and woke up in the same position. It was five in the morning and there was a pecking at the window. What on earth? I went to the window to see what was making that awful pecking noise. There was an owl at the window. I opened the window to shew it away and it flew right in. In one swift movement the owl changed into a man with silver hair and green flowing eyes. I screamed waking up Dom who jumped out of bed startled lunging for the intruder. The intruder quickly turned back into an owl and Dom started laughing. Why the hell was he laughing? What was funny about this? “Atticus you scared the s**t out of me,” Dom said through laughter. The bird changed back into a man and I turned on a light. Dom obviously knew him, “So this is where you’ve been hiding old friend.” “Sorry for such a late disturbance. I only just got in. Your Mum had to come through the portal to get me,” he said as I detected his British accent, “Dom you and I know each other but let me introduce myself, I am Atticus, your familiar,” he spoke turning towards me. “My familiar? Are you a witch also?” I asked. “ he gave a chuckle, “I am magic but not a witch. I’m a shape shifter. I can turn into anything I want to. Watch this,” he said before changing into a cute silver mouse. He transfomed back into a man before he spoke again. “I am your familiar. Our souls are seeded together for our life spans. When you came into your power your soul called to mine and I came. I am your protector, your confidant, your guide. We go through this every lifetime you know.” I looked at him, mouth agape, not knowing what to say. “Maybe a little too much for five a.m. Atticus,” Dom chuckled. “I'll head to my room then and we can resume this later before she decides to strike me with lightning like she did in her last life.” With that he was out the door and Dom motioned for me to crawl back in bed. My eyes popped open to day light pouring in. It was nine a.m. and Dom was already gone. I got Dressed and went down to the kitchen. Mom was there waiting for me with breakfast. I ate quickly and then mom took me to doctor Miaugi’s for my ultrasound. Ofcourse, Dom and Matti accompanied me. He was in a larger cottage on the east side of the property. He used a smaller cottage next door as his office with all his equipment. I laid on the table. The probe and jelly were warm thank god. That’s when I heard it. Two very distinct heartbeats. “It looks like twins,” said doctor Miaugi. He did some more maneuvering with the probe, “Fraternal girls to be exact, they each have their own sac. From what I see here you’re about fourteen weeks. We’ll do some blood work to make sure but both babies look healthy.” Dom and Matti were both pale and looked about to faint and mom was still holding my hand, mouth agape. Doctor Miaugi took my blood and promised to stop by with results. We returned home around eleven and mom made some tea while I studied the books she had given me. Malachi and Matti needed to return back to the real world for business and supplies and dad was busy elsewhere with Dom restoring the wards which mom went to help them with after she brought me tea. She left me with Atticus and Viv to watch over me. They sat opposite me in the chairs. Viv was reading a book from the library and Atticus was playing with some sort of device. I needed to talk with both of them but we have time for that later. Right now I need to get through these books. There were spells for everything. I was making mental notes as I read. Writing down what I felt was most useful or questions I had for mom later. I made it through two books when I needed a break. I went to the kitchen to grab a sandwich and a water. I heard shouting and explosions from out front. I flung the front door open. Matti and Malachi were running up the yard with six guys coming up behind them. I thought this place was impenetrable. Malachi was shouting and Viv was running out the door. Atticus was trying to pull me back. I had walked out into the yard without realizing it. Matti tripped and fell as he was trying to throw a spell behind him. He was taking on two at a time instantly. My heart stopped. I felt anger surge through me. I channeled that emotion like mom had taught me. The silver was flowing through my veins. Power was flooding through me. “Venite Ad Me Flamma,” I whispered. The fireballs formed in my hand. I pushed it together and pulled it apart between my hands, making two fireballs. I locked on my targets and let the magic take over, striking both at the same time. I’ll be damned if I was gonna sit back and do nothing. All of a sudden electricity began to spark at my fingertips. I pulled my energy to amplify it. I sent out bolts of electricity that looked like lightning. They struck two more targets enclosing on Malachi. Malachi threw a spell back as one assailant threw a spell forward and they collided in midair creating a momentary wall of fire. Malachi reached the house as Matti struck an assailant with a spell that dropped him. The last guy was heading straight for us as Malachi zapped him with a spell setting him on fire. Malachi pulled me into the house and Matti came running in the door behind us slamming the door shut. Malachi went to radio mom and dad. I told Viv and Atticus I was okay and to go see what Malachi needed help with. That left me standing there with Matti who was doubled over trying to catch his breath. I expected him to head towards Malachi when he stood but he didn’t. He rushed me grabbing my face and pressing his lips to mine. His tounge was invading my mouth before I knew it and his fingers began to tangle in my hair. As quickly as it began it was over and he pulled back to look me in the eyes moving his hands down to my shoulders. “You saved my life and I am truly indebted to you. I love you but don’t you ever do that again. Don’t you ever put your life or theirs in danger again. That being said I have never seen you look more beautiful or more fierce than I did today. Please be more careful.” With that he turned on his heel headed in the direction on Malachi and left me staring after him in stupor. Atticus took me to the couch insisting there was nothing more I could do to help. Dom came bolting through the door followed by my parents. He cam barreling towards me checking me over for any marks. “Thank God you’re okay.” He said swooping me up into his arms. I needed to tell him about the kiss with Matti but I don’t think now is the appropriate time. He carried me up to bed. “I need you to stay here. I’m going to send your mom up.” He quickly turned on his heel and was gone shutting the door behind him. Mom was there in a flash. “Come with me hunny,” she said taking my hand and leading me into the big walk in closet. She moved the clothes and clicked a hidden lever up under the ledge. A small panel flipped open and she quickly ushered me inside. It opened up to a bigger room that had a small bed on one side with a fridge next to it. On the opposite wall was a camera system covering the house and grounds as well as a cabinet and shelves stocked with food, water, and supplies. There was another small door next to the fridge. I opened it to find a closet sized bathroom. “This is a safe room. Once inside, hit this button,” she said pointing to a green button on the wall, “It activates safe mode. It will lock you up in here safely. It will immediately turn red. To deactivate safe moth you hit the button again and it will turn green and unlock. This lever here unlocks the latch holding the door and pushes it open gor you. The walls and door are reinforced and I assure you impenetrable. It is also warded with magic for safety and concealment. There is enough supplies in here to last you a couple months. If anything happens you are to come to this room. We also stocked formula in the cabinet although we weren’t prepared for two babies well have to get more. Over under the computer is a collapsible bassinet. We’ll have to pick up another one of those. You and the babies will have everything you need.” I looked around at my surroundings ready to get out of this enclosed space. “Okay Mom I got it.” I repeated back so she knew I understood and we climbed out closing the door behind us. “I must go figure out what is going on and how this happened. I’ll have Atticus bring you something to eat and some tea,” she said kissing my forehead. I was alone again. I could resume to the books I’d left behind but those were downstairs. There was a knock on the door and Viv came in carrying a tray. She sat down on the bed next to me putting the tray between us. As I dressed my salad I turned my attention to her. “So, spill,” I said not looking at her. “I am a familiar, like Atticus, they felt it would be easier to have you room with a female familiar so I could keep you safe. Once we became friends I begged them to let me tell you but since you knew nothing about our world yet they wouldn’t let me. Please tell me your not super mad at me?” “I’m not mad. I understand their reasoning but I really wish I would have known,” I said wrapping her in a hug.
