Chapter 7

The elevator doors came open and I walked in to find Matti leaning against the bar and a tall slender woman sitting in the seat next him. She was very tan, and her hair was dark and very straight down her back to her hips. She had very sharp facial features and flawless skin. She looked like a model. She was gorgeous. She looked at me sharply and raised an eyebrow in interest when I came in. Matti came walking towards me. He broke her line of sight when he stepped in front of me. He was staring down at me, pleading for me to understand with his eyes. This was Eva. Oh s**t! Ok. I’ve got this. I looked up at Matti, “Can we talk for a minute?” “Yeah. I’ll meet you in the library.” I walked quietly to the library as he walked back to his previous conversation. He came in about five minutes later. He took a seat in one of the high back chairs in front of the desk that was behind me. I was staring at the city out the massive windows that lined the wall. Without turning to look at him I spoke softly, “That’s Eva isn’t it?” “Yes.” “Did you mean what you said earlier?” “Every word Taryn.” He stood up and moved towards me. He started to reach for me, he wanted to touch me, and suddenly he dropped his hand back to his side. “I want to try to work it out and see where it goes. I don’t want drama though. If it starts to get messy, I'm out. Deal?” “Deal.” He walked over to me and cupped my face with his hands. He bent down and kissed me gently at first and then his kiss became hungrier. He picked me up and sat me on the desk. I stopped him, “What about your, um, company?” “She’s already gone. I suppose we should probably talk about that, huh?” “Yeah. So, that was Eva?” “Yes. She brought some paperwork from the doctor for me to fill out.” “How much does she know about us?” “She knows we’re together and that I'm serious about you.” “Are there any questions about her that are off limits?” “No.” “Were there ever any feelings between you two?” “No.” “Not even on her end?” “I do not believe so, no.” “Not that I believe in abortion but who decided to keep the baby?” “We both did. That may be my flesh and blood and she doesn’t believe in abortion.” “What happened to protection and birth control?” “The rubbers broke on us a few times and her birth control apparently failed.” “How does she feel about you being with someone else.” “I don’t know but it doesn’t matter. She’ll have to just accept it.” “Ok. So, enough Q&A. Where were we?” He grabbed me up off the desk and I wrapped my legs around his waist. He carried me effortlessly upstairs to the bedroom where he ravaged me like a virgin on their wedding night. Matti drifted off to sleep with his arms around me. All I could do was lay there. Then I realized that I never actually checked my phone. I slid out of Matti’s arms and grabbed my phone out of my jacket pocket and went downstairs. I sat on Matti’s couch and went through my texts first. Malachi and Viv were checking on me, Matti was concerned and trying to explain, and then there was Dom. It wasn’t anything new or that I hadn’t already heard. So, then I listened to the voicemails and deleted most of them until I got to Dom’s. “Taryn, I know you don’t want to talk to me. I know you're avoiding me. I get it. Before you got here, I was ready for a change. I was waiting it out and then you showed up. I must take care of things right now but when it’s done, I'm coming for you. I wish I could explain more now but I can’t. I’ll talk to you soon.” What in the hell?!? Could he be any more cryptic? I think he has lost his mind. I saved it. I don’t know why I did but I did. He was my last message. I felt tired now. I walked back upstairs and crawled into bed next to the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. He felt me get into bed and rolled over to wrap his arms around me. I laid there curled against his chest. I must be the luckiest woman ever to have found him and for him to have chosen me to be his first actual relationship. I had feelings for him, real ones, strong ones. For a moment I forgot about Eva and our current situation. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep. I slept peacefully only to awake to chaos. Matti was up throwing clothes and shoes on. “What’s going on?” “Eva called. She’s at the hospital. She started bleeding.” He ran out of the bedroom and out the door leaving his phone on the stand beside the bed. Well I guess I won’t be talking to him until later. I rolled over and looked at my phone. It was nearly six a.m. and I had class in a couple hours. I rolled over and grabbed his phone. I know I should just sit it back down, but I can’t. I pressed a button and the phone lit up. I swiped right and his home screen popped up. I hit his text messaging icon. I found Eva at the top of the list. This b***h. I see texts every ten minutes. “What are you doing?” “How was your day?” “I’m cooking dinner. Want to come by?” He never said anything out of the way to her and he was polite. A lot of the times he didn’t even respond. She texted him five times after she left and called twice. He never answered or responded and then an hour after her last text came the text: Call me ASAP @ the hospital That was when, according to the call log, he called her, and then she called back, and then he was gone. I knew the game she was playing. Matti would catch on eventually. I hit the home button on Matti’s phone and laid it back on the stand. I made sure my alarm was on and I went back to sleep. When I got up for class Matti was asleep on his couch. I crept over next to him. His eyes popped open immediately. “Hey beautiful.” “Hey.” “I didn’t want to wake you when I came in.” “Everything ok?” “Yeah. Implantation bleeding. Completely normal.” “Ok. Go to bed. I have class.” “I’ll drive you home.” “No! Go to bed! I’m a big girl. I’ll make it home just fine.” “Ok,” he said pulling me close into a soft kiss. When he let go, he said, “Call me later.” He released me and I was out the door to meet my Uber. I made it to class with ten minutes to spare. Suddenly, the lights lowered, and the spotlight was up. The man standing in the center began to speak. Ok, Taryn, time to focus.
