28 Since leaving school, I’d worked for the family business, a job I’d always been content with, relaxed in the knowledge it kept me close to the pack. That morning, for the first time, the mere sight of the construction project twisted an ugly knot in my stomach, one full of resentment at having to be there instead of finding answers to the questions driving me nuts. Over an hour before, I’d arrived in Dad’s pickup, jumped out with a scowl, and marched straight for the cabin. The scowl had yet to leave my face, and my body had still to do anything useful. When Nathan had summoned me over to keep his bricks stacked, he’d gotten mad after the fourth time of reaching for his supply and finding it lacking—resulting in me being sent to find someone else to assist and Gabe taking my place.
