The First Challenge
The following morning, Liam woke up earlier than usual.
The dream of becoming a chef was still fresh in his mind. He could almost see himself standing inside a large kitchen, wearing a white chef’s coat and preparing delicious meals for many people.
But when Liam entered their kitchen, reality quickly reminded him of how far he still had to go.
Their old stove was barely working. One burner refused to light, and the handle of their only good frying pan was loose.
Liam sighed.
“Someday,” he whispered, looking at the stove, “I’ll have a real kitchen.”
That afternoon, Liam’s teacher announced an upcoming school cooking competition.
“Each participant must prepare a dish using simple and affordable ingredients,” the teacher explained. “The winner will receive a scholarship for a basic culinary training program.”
Liam’s eyes widened.
A scholarship.
It was exactly the opportunity he had been dreaming about.
“Mom, I want to join!” Liam said excitedly when he arrived home.
Maria smiled, but her expression soon became worried.
“I know you want to, Liam. But we may not have enough money for the ingredients.”
Liam became quiet.
He looked at the few vegetables on the table and then at their old cooking utensils.
“I can use whatever we have,” he said. “I don't need expensive ingredients.”
His mother gently placed her hand on his shoulder.
“Then give it your best.”
For the next several days, Liam practiced whenever he could. He experimented with vegetables, rice, eggs, and whatever ingredients were available.
Not every attempt was successful.
Sometimes the food was too salty.
Sometimes it was burned.
Once, he even dropped an entire plate on the floor.
Liam wanted to give up.
But every time he felt discouraged, he remembered his mother's words.
Put your heart into everything you make.
Finally, the day of the competition arrived.
Liam stood in front of his cooking station, nervous but determined.
Around him were students with expensive knives, modern cookware, and ingredients Liam had never even seen before.
He looked at his simple ingredients.
For a moment, doubt filled his mind.
Maybe I don't belong here.
Then he remembered his promise.
“I will never give up.”
Liam took a deep breath and began to cook.
He did not have the best equipment.
He did not have the most expensive ingredients.
But he had something more important.
He had a dream.
And he was ready to fight for it.
