The Unexpected Result
The smell of freshly cooked food filled the school hall as the contestants finished their dishes.
Liam stepped back from his table and looked at his creation.
It was simple—fried garlic rice with vegetables, a tender egg omelet, and a special sauce he had created using the ingredients available at home.
He knew it was not perfect.
But he had given it everything he had.
“Time is up!” the teacher announced.
The judges began tasting each contestant's dish.
Liam watched nervously as they moved from one table to another.
When the judges reached his station, Liam stood straight.
“Tell us about your dish,” one of the judges asked.
Liam swallowed nervously.
“I called it Home,” he said. “The ingredients are simple because this is the kind of food I grew up eating with my mother. I wanted the judges to taste something that reminds them of home.”
The judges exchanged glances.
One of them took another bite.
“This is simple,” the judge said, “but it has something special.”
Liam smiled.
After all the dishes had been judged, the contestants gathered in front of the stage.
The principal stepped forward with the results.
“In third place…”
The crowd became silent.
“In second place…”
Liam held his breath.
“And the winner of this year's cooking competition is…”
He closed his eyes.
“Liam Santos!”
The hall erupted in applause.
Liam stood frozen.
“Me?”
His teacher smiled.
“Yes, Liam. You.”
Liam walked toward the stage, barely believing what had happened.
He received the certificate and scholarship for culinary training.
But the biggest reward came when he looked into the crowd and saw his mother standing there with tears in her eyes.
After the ceremony, Maria hugged him tightly.
“I told you,” she whispered. “Your dream is possible.”
Liam smiled.
“This is only the beginning, Mom.”
However, Liam did not know that his victory would soon attract the attention of someone who did not want him to succeed.
Someone who would become his greatest rival.
And his next challenge would be much harder than any cooking competition.
