"The First Real Job"
A few days after graduating from the culinary academy, Liam received a message from Chef Gabriel.
Come to the restaurant tomorrow. I have something to discuss with you.
Liam's heart raced.
The next morning, he arrived early at the restaurant.
It was larger and more elegant than any kitchen he had ever worked in.
The dining area was filled with beautiful tables, bright lights, and expensive decorations.
Liam stood outside the kitchen door and took a deep breath.
“This is it.”
Chef Gabriel approached him.
“Are you ready?”
“Yes, Chef.”
“Good. Today, you start as a junior cook.”
Liam smiled.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”
“Don't thank me yet,” Chef Gabriel said with a grin. “The kitchen will test you.”
Liam soon discovered that he was right.
The restaurant was busy from the moment the doors opened.
Orders came one after another.
“Two chicken!”
“Three seafood!”
“Table seven needs their rice!”
Liam moved quickly between the stations.
His hands shook during his first few orders.
One plate came back because the chicken was undercooked.
Another dish had too much salt.
Liam felt embarrassed.
Chef Gabriel pulled him aside.
“Slow down.”
“But the orders—”
“Speed comes after control. If you panic, the food suffers.”
Liam nodded.
“Yes, Chef.”
He took a breath and returned to work.
By the end of the night, he was exhausted.
But he had survived his first shift.
As Liam was cleaning his station, a man entered the kitchen.
Everyone immediately became quiet.
Chef Gabriel stood straight.
“Good evening, Mr. Victor.”
The man was Victor Montenegro, the owner of the restaurant.
He looked around the kitchen before stopping in front of Liam.
“You're the new cook.”
“Yes, Sir.”
“I heard about you.”
Liam became nervous.
Victor studied him.
“People say you have talent.”
Liam remained silent.
Victor picked up a spoon and tasted a sauce Liam had prepared.
His expression did not change.
“Talent is cheap,” Victor said.
Liam looked at him.
“What matters is whether you can create something people are willing to pay for.”
Victor placed the spoon down.
“I am planning to open a new restaurant next year.”
Liam listened carefully.
“And I need a chef who can create something different.”
Victor looked directly at him.
“If you want that opportunity, prove yourself.”
Liam nodded.
“I will.”
Victor walked away.
Chef Gabriel looked at Liam.
“Be careful.”
“Why?”
“Victor doesn't give opportunities easily.”
Liam looked toward the restaurant owner.
For the first time, he realized that his journey was no longer just about learning how to cook.
It was about discovering what kind of chef he wanted to become.
And the biggest test of his career was about to begin.
