The Difficult Choice

454 Words
"The Difficult Choice" Liam barely slept that night. His mother's words kept running through his mind. The rent is due soon. He looked at the small envelope beside his bed. Inside was the money he had been saving for his culinary training. It wasn't much, but it was enough to buy a few things he needed for the next level of his course. Liam stared at the envelope. Then he thought about his mother. The next morning, he placed the envelope on the kitchen table. “Mom, take this.” Maria looked at the money and immediately shook her head. “No, Liam.” “But we need it.” “That money is for your dream.” “My dream won't matter if you don't have a place to live.” Maria became silent. She reached for Liam's hand. “Listen to me. I didn't support your dream so you could give it up for me.” “But, Mom—” “No.” Her voice was gentle but firm. “You promised me that you would never give up.” Liam looked down. “I remember.” “Then keep your promise.” A few days later, Liam started working part-time at a small neighborhood restaurant. He washed dishes, cleaned tables, carried supplies, and helped prepare ingredients. The work was tiring. Sometimes he arrived at training exhausted. Sometimes he fell asleep while studying recipes. But he refused to complain. One evening, the restaurant's head chef noticed Liam carefully preparing vegetables after his shift. “You're still working?” “Yes, Chef.” “Why?” Liam smiled. “Because I want to become a chef someday.” The chef studied him for a moment. “Then stop thinking like someone who only wants to become a chef.” Liam looked confused. “What do you mean?” “A real chef learns from every job in the kitchen. Washing dishes teaches discipline. Preparing ingredients teaches patience. Cleaning teaches responsibility.” The chef handed Liam a knife. “Now show me what you can do.” Liam began chopping. The chef watched closely. After a few minutes, he nodded. “You have potential.” Those words gave Liam new confidence. But his journey was about to take an unexpected turn. The following week, the restaurant received an invitation to participate in a prestigious regional cooking competition. The head chef looked at Liam. “I want you on my team.” Liam's eyes widened. This was an opportunity he could not ignore. But when he saw the list of competing teams, his heart stopped. One of the names was familiar. Adrian Cruz. Their rivalry was about to move to a much bigger stage.
