"The Unexpected Mentor"
The next morning, Liam arrived at the academy before everyone else.
He wanted to practice the techniques he had failed to master the day before.
He prepared his ingredients, sharpened his knife, and began working.
Chop.
Slice.
Mix.
Taste.
Again.
He repeated the process until his hands became tired.
“You're still here?”
Liam turned around.
It was Adrian.
Liam smiled.
“I could ask you the same question.”
Adrian placed his bag on the table.
“I heard about your exam.”
Liam looked down.
“I didn't do very well.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
Liam raised an eyebrow.
“Thanks for reminding me.”
Adrian laughed.
“I wasn't trying to insult you.”
He picked up a spoon and tasted Liam's sauce.
“You're making the same mistake again.”
“What mistake?”
“You're trying too hard to make the dish complicated.”
Liam looked at him.
Adrian continued.
“Your strength has always been simple food with strong flavor. Don't try to become someone you're not.”
Liam was surprised.
“Since when did you become my cooking teacher?”
“I'm not.”
Adrian smiled.
“I'm just telling you what I see.”
Liam tasted the sauce again.
Adrian was right.
He adjusted the seasoning and cooked another batch.
This time, the flavor was much better.
Liam smiled.
“Thanks.”
“Don't thank me yet.”
Adrian pointed toward the stove.
“Now do it ten more times.”
Liam laughed.
For the next several hours, they practiced together.
The rivalry between them had slowly changed into something unexpected.
Respect.
---
A few days later, the academy announced a special masterclass.
A famous Filipino chef would be teaching the students.
When the chef entered the kitchen, everyone became silent.
His name was Chef Gabriel Reyes, one of the country's most respected chefs.
After demonstrating several techniques, Chef Gabriel asked the students to prepare their own signature dish.
One by one, the students presented their creations.
When Liam's turn came, he placed his dish on the table.
Chef Gabriel tasted it.
He remained silent for several seconds.
Then he looked at Liam.
“Where did you learn to cook?”
“At home, Chef.”
“Who taught you?”
“My mother.”
Chef Gabriel smiled.
“That explains it.”
Liam looked confused.
“Explains what?”
“Your food has something technical training cannot teach.”
“What is that?”
“Memory.”
Liam's eyes widened.
Chef Gabriel continued.
“Your dish reminds people of somewhere. That is the beginning of great cooking.”
Liam felt proud.
Then Chef Gabriel gave him a card.
“I am opening a new restaurant soon. I am looking for young cooks who have talent and passion.”
Liam looked at the card.
“Are you offering me a job?”
“Not yet.”
Chef Gabriel smiled.
“First, prove that you can handle the responsibility.”
Liam nodded.
“I will.”
That evening, Liam stared at the card for a long time.
His dream suddenly felt closer than ever.
But another challenge was waiting.
The academy announced its final examination.
Only the top students would receive professional recommendations.
Liam knew exactly what he had to do.
He had one final chance to prove himself.
And this time, he would not cook just to win.
He would cook for the person who started his dream.
His mother.
