* * * * Ford returned sometime later with a battered, scorched pot full of potatoes that had seen better days, and a skinned rabbit. “Thankfully, the cellar more or less survived intact,” Ford explained. “I gathered what looked edible, and left everything in my saddlebags for our journey back to town, and added the jerky I found in Ben’s supplies. Then I managed to catch a fresh rabbit, too. The poor guy was in the wrong place at the right time.” Eliza nodded again. Ford built a small fire, feeding it wood and hay until a pile of red-hot coals formed at the bottom of the shallow pit he had dug.
