Chapter 4 — Parallel Lives

432 Words
The next morning felt unreal for both of them. Ariana woke up in her immaculate bedroom, staring at the chandelier overhead — yet her thoughts were miles away, in that rain-soaked shop with the sister she’d never known. Selene, meanwhile, stood outside Timeless Echoes, coffee in hand, replaying every word from the night before. She hadn’t let anyone in for years. But somehow, Ariana’s soft voice still echoed in her head. Both women, for the first time, saw their worlds differently. Ariana looked around her mansion — the perfection, the emptiness — and wondered how much she had missed while pretending to be content. Selene looked at her cluttered shop — the freedom, the loneliness — and wondered what it would feel like to belong somewhere. Later that day, Ariana found herself sitting in her car outside the antique shop again. She hadn’t planned to return so soon. But her hands had driven her there before her mind could protest. Selene opened the door, smirking. “Back already? Didn’t get enough of my sparkling personality?” Ariana laughed softly. “I brought lunch.” Two takeout boxes of noodles, still warm. Selene’s brow arched, but she stepped aside. “You’re lucky I like free food.” They ate on the shop floor, legs crossed among stacks of dusty crates. For the first time, Ariana felt… normal. No polished table, no watchful eyes — just laughter, messy food, and freedom. “So,” Selene said, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. “What’s it like? That mansion life?” Ariana hesitated. “Lonely. Controlled. I have everything… but nothing that’s mine.” Selene whistled. “Sounds glamorous.” Ariana smiled sadly. “And you? What’s it like being your own boss?” “Liberating. Terrifying. You wake up every day not knowing if you’ll make it — but at least it’s your choice.” Their eyes met again. That same flicker of recognition — envy mixed with admiration. “You know,” Selene said, half-joking, “maybe we should swap. You can live my disaster life for a bit, and I’ll see what it’s like to have a driver and a chandelier.” Ariana laughed — but her heart skipped. Because for one wild moment, it didn’t sound like a joke. Selene noticed her expression and smirked. “Relax, I’m kidding.” But Ariana’s eyes drifted toward the locket around her neck. Maybe… fate wasn’t kidding. And as thunder rolled faintly in the distance, both sisters felt it — that invisible thread pulling them toward something reckless, impossible, and inevitable.
