THE WOMAN BESIDE HIM

1587 Words
Kael publicly presents Selene as the woman he has chosen. Lyra is forced to endure the celebration of her replacement while Selene delivers polite words designed to humiliate her. --- Kael stepped away from Lyra. He walked toward Selene. Lyra watched his hand close around Selene's. The applause grew louder. Someone whistled from the back of the hall. A few of the younger wolves laughed, and Lyra couldn't tell whether they were laughing at her or simply celebrating what they thought was a glorious night. It didn't matter. Her ears were ringing. She could hear her own heartbeat beneath the noise. One. Two. Three. Kael lifted Selene's hand. The emerald at Selene's throat caught the light from the Lunar Crystal above them. She smiled. Not nervously. Not apologetically. She looked like a woman receiving something she had always expected to be hers. Lyra stared at their joined hands. The hand that had once held hers beneath blankets when thunderstorms shook the windows. The hand that had once pulled her behind Kael's body when a drunken warrior started a fight. The same hand that had slipped a silver ring onto her finger three years ago. Mine. That was what Kael had whispered then. Not anymore. Elder Garrick raised his staff. "Let the Moon bear witness." The crowd fell silent. Kael's fingers tightened around Selene's. "Selene Arclight," he said, his voice carrying across the hall, "I accept you as my chosen Luna." A cheer exploded around them. Lyra felt something inside her crack. Not the mate bond. Not yet. Something smaller. Something she had spent years protecting. Her belief that whatever happened, Kael would never humiliate her deliberately. That belief died quietly. She didn't cry. She refused. Her nails dug into her palms until pain gave her something solid to hold. Selene turned her head. Their eyes met. For the briefest moment, the perfect smile disappeared. There was calculation behind Selene's eyes. Then the smile returned. She leaned closer to Kael. "Perhaps," Selene said softly, though her voice carried farther than it should have, "we should greet everyone properly." Kael nodded. "Of course." Selene looked toward the clan. Then toward Lyra. The room became painfully quiet. Selene released Kael's hand. She walked toward Lyra. Each step was measured. Elegant. The sort of walk Lyra had seen noble women practice during ceremonies when she was a child. When Selene stopped in front of her, she smelled faintly of white roses and something sharper underneath. A perfume meant to linger. "I hope this isn't too difficult for you," Selene said. Lyra blinked. There were hundreds of wolves watching. She wondered if Selene knew how cruel those words sounded. Probably. Selene's expression remained sympathetic. "I know you've been with Kael for a long time." A murmur passed through the crowd. Lyra's throat tightened. Selene lowered her voice. "But you must understand that being someone's first choice doesn't necessarily mean being their best choice." There it was. A clean blade disguised as kindness. Lyra looked at her. "You rehearsed that?" Selene's brows lifted. "What?" "The speech." A few wolves nearby went silent. Lyra forced her lips into something resembling a smile. "Because if you didn't, that's almost impressive." Someone coughed. Another wolf looked away. Selene's smile stiffened. Kael stepped closer. "Lyra." She turned toward him. His eyes were cold now. Not because he was angry. Because he was embarrassed. That hurt more. "What?" she asked. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be." A strange laugh escaped her. It was small. Almost breathless. "Harder?" Kael's jaw tightened. "You know what I mean." "No." Lyra shook her head. "I really don't." "Lyra." "You brought me here." Her voice remained quiet. "You told me to wear this dress." Kael glanced at it. "You told me everything was fine." He said nothing. "You stood beside me for twenty minutes without telling me that you were about to replace me." "That's not what this is." She looked at Selene. Then back at him. "Then what is it?" Kael's expression shifted. For the first time, she saw pain in his eyes. It should have comforted her. It didn't. He looked almost as miserable as she felt. Almost. "I've made my decision." Lyra nodded slowly. "Yes." Her voice came out surprisingly calm. "You have." She looked around the hall. At the elders. At the warriors. At the women whispering behind their hands. At the families who had spent years watching her fail to become the Luna they wanted. Then she looked back at Kael. "Did they know?" His silence answered her. Lyra's stomach dropped. "The council?" Kael didn't respond. "Your mother?" Nothing. "Selene?" Selene's expression remained composed. Lyra laughed once. "You all knew." "No," Kael said. She stared at him. "I knew." The words came from an older woman near the eastern pillar. Lyra turned. Aunt Mira. One of the women who had helped raise her after her mother's death. Mira looked away. Lyra felt something cold settle beneath her ribs. She had thought she was being rejected tonight. She hadn't realized she was the last person to find out. Kael took a step toward her. "Lyra, listen to me." "Don't." He stopped. She held up a hand. "Just don't." Her voice trembled now. She hated that. She hated that her body was betraying her when she had worked so hard to keep her face still. Kael lowered his voice. "I never wanted to hurt you." Lyra stared at him. "Then you should have tried harder." Silence. Even Selene seemed momentarily caught off guard. Lyra looked down at the floor. A trail of crushed juniper lay between her shoes. Someone had scattered it for the ceremony. Its sharp scent filled her lungs. She breathed in. Slowly. Then she lifted her head. "If this is about the clan," she said, "tell them." Kael frowned. "What?" "Tell them why." He hesitated. Lyra's eyes didn't leave his. "Tell everyone why Selene is better." "Lyra—" "No." She stepped closer. Not enough to touch him. Enough that only he could hear her. "Say it." Kael's face tightened. "You're not strong enough." The words were quiet. But they cut deeper than shouting could have. Lyra stared at him. He continued before he could lose his nerve. "Your Lunar Mark barely manifested. Your wolf hasn't fully awakened. You can't transform consistently. You can't defend the territory. You can't—" "Be a Luna." Kael stopped. Lyra finished the sentence for him. "That's what you mean." He looked away. She nodded. "All right." A tear threatened to escape. She blinked it back. "At least you finally said it." Kael looked at her again. "Lyra, I didn't say you were worthless." "No." She smiled faintly. "You just chose someone else because she's useful." His face tightened. Selene stepped forward. "Lyra, perhaps we should—" "Don't." Selene stopped. Lyra turned toward her. "I don't need your sympathy." "I wasn't offering sympathy." "Then what were you offering?" Selene's gaze hardened for half a second. "Peace." Lyra almost smiled. "Funny." "What is?" "You arrived in my home, took my mate, and now you're offering me peace." Selene's lips parted. No answer came. Kael stepped between them. "Enough." Lyra looked at him. "You're right." She reached for the silver chain around her neck. The small pendant hanging from it was the symbol of her bond with Kael. She had worn it every day for three years. She pulled it free. The chain snapped against her fingers. The pendant landed in her palm. Kael stared at it. His face changed. "Lyra." She held it out. "Take it." He didn't move. "Take it, Kael." His fingers slowly closed around the pendant. The moment his skin touched it, Lyra felt the first tremor beneath her ribs. Her wolf stirred. Hard. Violently. Lyra inhaled sharply. For a heartbeat, she heard something that wasn't the crowd. A whisper. Low. Feral. Almost ancient. No. Her eyes widened. She had never heard Nyx sound like that before. Kael's fingers tightened around the pendant. His eyes lifted to hers. "Don't do this." Lyra swallowed. "Do what?" "Make me feel like a monster." She stared at him. A bitter smile touched her mouth. "You don't need my help with that." Kael flinched. Lyra turned away. But before she could take a single step, Elder Garrick struck his staff against the floor. Once. The sound silenced the room. "The bond," he announced, "must be formally severed." Lyra froze. Kael closed his eyes. Selene stood behind him. The entire clan waited. Lyra could feel every gaze on her skin. She turned slowly. Kael was already looking at her. For one terrible second, she remembered another night. A warm room. Rain against the windows. Kael sitting beside her on the bed, holding her hand. I'll never let anyone make you feel like you're not enough. She had believed him. She had been stupid enough to believe him. Now he stood beneath the Lunar Crystal with another woman waiting at his side. Lyra took one breath. Then another. "Do it." Kael's expression broke. "Lyra—" "Do it." Her voice was steadier this time. "If you've already chosen her, then stop making me stand here and watch you hesitate." Kael stared at her. The hall was so quiet that Lyra could hear the candles burning. Finally, Kael raised his hand. Silver light gathered around his wrist. Lyra's heart began to pound. Her wolf snarled inside her. Run. Lyra didn't. Kael's eyes met hers. Then he pulled. The bond began to break.
