49 The Auction
Blake awoke to notice two things about his new surroundings. First, it appeared to be first light, and second, another person was already awake, stoking the fire to life. He could even smell coca leaf tea steeping in boiling water. As Blake sat up, he noticed that it was neither Leo nor Natan at the fire. Instead, it was the bartender from the night before who had offered up such incredible hospitality. “When the others wake, we’ll have the conversation I’ve been waiting to have with you,” said the man with a gentle voice. “Sounds like a plan,” replied Blake with a voice that he wished were less groggy. “The tea is ready,” stated the bartender while handing him a cup. Natan stirred first, and then Leo. The two of them got up and joined the others for tea and conversation. “I
