Roland came out two minutes later and we drove out to the library. I was reclined in the corner of the car, watching the passing landscape, my mind replaying the circumstance that took place that morning; the manner Paisley had broken the news of her pregnancy, and how much of a fool I felt. It made tears sting the back of my eyes, but I bit down on my cheek, willing it back.
"So what is so important that would make you go to the library? What's the research about?"
I was startled out of my gloomy thoughts, fast-tracking my mind to the present, to know how to respond. I shrugged. "Nothing much. I-I want to research some science stuff." I averted my eyes rapidly, hence he saw through my lies.
He hummed, his eyes making movement between looking at me and looking ahead.
