Chapter Twelve She could hear Jim and the girls vaguely through the open upstairs window. Was he reading them a story or just getting them ready for bed? All she heard was laughter, still feeling the warmth that existed in this house, in this family. She should’ve been happy for the girls, but all it did was make the giant hole in her heart ache more than it had before she’d set foot on Carly Jackson’s doorstep. Now she sat in a big outdoor chair, Carly sitting across from her in the dark. The conversation piece was set well away from the house on the back lawn.
