Chapter 11: The Goddess Within

1079 Words
The night after the Moon Trials was restless. Storms gathered above Elanthria, lightning flickering in unnatural patterns across the sky like warnings written in code. The moons hung lower than usual, bleeding faint red light, and the winds whispered her name. Seraphina. She couldn’t sleep. Not after what she saw in the crater. Not after Lucien. The fallen angel now rested in one of the palace’s high towers, warded by Kael’s spells and guarded by Talon himself. Rael had gone silent—too silent—retreating into his fire-slicked realm to “clear his thoughts,” which meant he was likely brooding with a glass of demonwine and imagining creative ways to burn Lucien to ash. But Seraphina didn’t go to any of them—not at first. Instead, she stood alone beneath the sacred moonbloom tree, high on the palace cliffs. The petals glowed silver-blue, drifting through the air like snowflakes as she tried to calm the fire rippling beneath her skin. Her mark was changing again. The golden flame once etched over her heart now danced with threads of moonlight and starlight, shimmering in a new pattern that pulsed every time she thought of her bonded. Kael. Rael. Talon. And now… Lucien. She wasn’t bonded to the angel yet, but something within her stirred in his presence—an ache, like a forgotten promise. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply. And that’s when the visions began. It wasn’t a dream. She stood in a world made of light and ruins. White marble palaces cracked under vines. Stars fell from the sky like dying birds. And in the center stood a throne carved from bones and flowers—familiar, yet terrifying. A version of herself sat on that throne. Her hair was longer, her eyes pure gold. A crown of moons hovered above her head. She was laughing. Surrounded by her four consorts. Kael, armored in shadow and steel, kneeling at her side. Rael, lounging with a smirk, flame-touched fingers tracing her shoulder. Talon, wrapped in wolf furs, growling in pleasure as she pulled him close. Lucien, still winged and haloed, standing behind her with a hand on her throat, whispering blessings and blasphemies alike. She gasped and stumbled back. Her other self turned toward her—and smiled. “You chose us once, Goddess. You’ll choose again. But will you make the same mistake?” The vision shattered. Seraphina jolted awake, cold sweat clinging to her skin. She was no longer under the tree. She was in Kael’s quarters. Wrapped in soft black sheets. And he was beside her—shirtless, as always, his eyes burning with worry. “You were screaming,” he said quietly. “Your power surged across the cliffs. I brought you here before the guards saw.” She sat up slowly, pressing a hand to her chest. “I saw them. All of you. In another life.” Kael’s jaw tensed. “You’re remembering.” “It felt real. Too real.” “You were a goddess of convergence,” Kael murmured, brushing damp hair from her face. “Meant to unify what others feared to bring together. Light, dark, beast, divine. We were drawn to you then. Just as we are now.” “Kael…” She looked up at him, searching his face. “Why you? Why were you the first?” He leaned closer, his forehead resting against hers. “Because I loved you before I even had a soul to give.” She kissed him—soft, slow, full of questions and longing. He responded with restraint, one hand gripping her thigh, the other buried in her hair, his mouth worshiping hers like it might be the last time. Later that night, still sleepless, she wandered to the tower where Lucien lay resting. The guards parted without question. As she entered, the room flared with light—Lucien’s wings, still damaged, reflexively shielding him as he stirred awake. He blinked. “Seraphina.” “You’re healing faster than you should.” “I’m near you. That’s why.” She approached, touching one wing gently. He shivered, jaw tightening. “Why me?” she asked. “I don’t want to belong to heaven or hell,” he said, voice hoarse. “Only you made me want to belong at all.” His hand reached up, brushing her cheek. She leaned down slowly, and their lips met in a soft, uncertain kiss—one that burned like holiness wrapped in sin. No bond formed… not yet. But it wanted to. She could feel it waiting. She left Lucien’s tower shaken. Only to find Talon waiting outside her door. Leaning casually against the stone, arms crossed, golden eyes glowing with something unreadable. “You kissed the angel,” he said. “You were watching?” “I couldn’t sleep,” he said with a shrug. “And your scent doesn’t lie.” She stepped toward him. “Do you care?” “I care that you’re being pulled in four directions and no one’s giving you time to breathe.” She smiled, soft and tired. “And you?” “I’m not here to claim you tonight,” he said. “I’m here to hold you while the others burn.” And he did. He pulled her into his arms and carried her to her bed, where he lay beside her—not touching, not pushing—just there. Warm. Present. Protective. And finally… just before dawn… Rael returned. He appeared in her chamber like smoke and fire, his coat smelling of ash and envy. “You’ve been busy,” he said quietly, voice low and dangerous. “I’ve been surviving.” He stepped closer. “Do I still have a place?” She met his eyes, her voice barely a whisper. “You always did.” He reached for her. This kiss was different—deep, slow, trembling with everything he never said. When they parted, he whispered, “Don’t make me fight for you again. I already lost once.” Seraphina stood at her balcony as dawn broke over Elanthria. The goddess was awakening. Four men stood in her orbit—Kael, Rael, Talon, and Lucien. Each claimed a piece of her. Each stirred her power. And as the sun rose, her mark flared with golden fire, expanding across her chest like wings made of flame and stars. Her power was no longer sleeping. She wasn’t either.
