CHAPTER ELEVEN The Lake County Courthouse is two blocks from my office. I walk over to the imposing modern structure. Small slits for windows are set into the monolithic sand-colored façade. The civil filing clerk’s office is nestled deep in the bowels of the building. Divorce records are sealed to preserve the privacy of the parties. A lawyer friend of mine says divorce law is all about good people behaving badly, and criminal law is all about bad people trying to behave well. Sealing divorce records ensures some measure of privacy for normally decent people who are treated like serial killers. Shahbaz got me a signed order from Judge Wardman for Edwards’ divorce records. I give the case slip and warrant to the clerk, who produces two gorged folders, each bearing large black lettering
