“Liam?” No response. The door to the condo was open. I found my cell phone and, dialing, cursed when Kathy’s phone emitted a dull buzz in the drawer next to the bed. “Liam?” I said, a little louder. If Liam answered, I was up for whatever demands the boy could muster. The condo remained silent. My heart raced, a cold sliver of fear stirring my guts. I ran to the entryway downstairs. The afternoon sun struck me in the face. A bougainvillea-draped trellis spanning the entrance cut the light into triangles. As I ran down the path, several lizards scampered under the bushes. The hot terracotta walkway burned my bare feet, yet I raced all the way to the bottom of the drive where the entrance met the highway. Fearing the worst, I scanned the highway that separated the condos from the beach. P
