CHAPTER EIGHTEEN I drive straight to the health club, wave hello to Tyler, the manager, and make my way down to the locker room. It’s late enough to have the pool to myself. Fluorescent lights hum as I stand at the end of the pool watching the gentle undulations of the water. I brace myself and jump in. I swim thirty laps, finishing at the deep end. Checking again to see if the room is empty, I take several quick breaths and let myself fall to the bottom. I sit, transfixed, repeating my ritual. Images play in my mind like an endless film loop. I hope the numbing ache will slow the spinning in my head, but the water brings no solace, no peace. Linda Wesley warned me off Nora, and her threat is real. I also risk losing my job if Delahunt finds out I’m still working on the Summers’ case. B
