The Night Sofia Disappeared

808 Words
I spent the entire night staring at the same message. Ask him why he lied about being alone that night. Seven words. But they changed everything. Because there was one thing I had learned about Alessandro De Luca. He could hide emotions. He could hide pain. He could even hide the truth. But he never ignored a question. Not anymore. And that meant there was something he wasn't telling me. Something important. --- I found him in the kitchen early the next morning. He looked exactly like he always did. Perfect suit. Calm expression. Controlled movements. But I knew better now. I knew the man behind the mask. Or at least, I thought I did. "We need to talk." He looked at me. The moment our eyes met, he knew. "What happened?" I placed my phone on the table. His expression changed when he read the message. Only for a second. But I saw it. Fear. Not surprise. Fear. "Who sent this?" "I don't know." "Did you reply?" "No." "Good." I hated how quickly he switched into protection mode. "Don't do that." His eyes moved to mine. "Do what?" "Act like this is only about keeping me safe." A pause. "Because it isn't." He looked away. And that silence was an answer. "You know who was there that night." His jaw tightened. "Elena." "Tell me." "Some truths are dangerous." "Then let me decide if I'm strong enough to know them." The words stayed between us. Because they were my mother's words. Be brave. Ask questions. Finally, Alessandro sat down. "I wasn't alone that night." My heart sank. "Who was with you?" He didn't answer immediately. And that was the first sign that the person mattered. "Alessandro." "Adrian." The name surprised me. "Adrian Vale?" "Yes." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because Adrian disappeared after that night." I frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means I couldn't find him." "Or you didn't want to?" His eyes met mine. "I searched for him for years." There was something in his voice. Something real. "Why?" "Because he knew what happened." I sat across from him. "Then tell me everything." --- Sixteen years earlier Alessandro remembered the rain. That was the first thing. The second was Sofia's voice. She had been afraid. Not for herself. For Elena. "Take my daughter away from here." Those were the first words she said when he arrived. Not hello. Not explanations. Just a mother's desperate request. Alessandro had never forgotten that. Because Sofia Rossi was not a woman who scared easily. She was the strongest person he had ever met. And that night... she looked terrified. "What happened?" She looked toward the road. "They know." "Who?" "My mistake was thinking Victor was the only one involved." Alessandro remembered the way she held the envelope. The evidence. The reason powerful people wanted her silent. "You need to leave." "I can't." "Why?" She looked at him. "Because they will find Elena." Those words changed everything. Because Alessandro understood something. Sofia wasn't trying to save herself. She was trying to save her daughter. Then he heard a sound. A car. Approaching. Too fast. Sofia's expression changed. "Alessandro, go." "No." "You don't understand." "I do." He stepped closer. "I promised I would protect you." She shook her head. "No." Her eyes filled with sadness. "Protect my daughter." --- The memory ended. Alessandro looked back at Elena. "I arrived too late." "What happened?" "I saw Sofia's car." "And?" "Adrian was there." My breath caught. "He was alive?" "Yes." "Then why did he disappear?" Alessandro's expression darkened. "Because before he left, he told me something." "What?" He looked at me. "He said Sofia trusted the wrong person." A chill moved through me. "Who?" "I don't know." "You never found out?" "No." I watched him carefully. "But you suspected someone." Silence. That was enough. "Who?" His voice was barely a whisper. "My father." I froze. "Your father?" "Yes." "But your father is dead." "That doesn't mean he wasn't responsible." The room felt colder. A dead man. A missing woman. A family full of secrets. And a husband who had spent sixteen years carrying guilt. --- That evening, I found something hidden inside the old letter from my mother. Something I had missed before. A second page. A single sentence. Written in a different ink. Elena, if Alessandro tells you he failed me, don't believe him. My heart stopped. I read the next line. He was the only one who tried to save me. I looked at the words for a long time. Then I understood. Someone wanted me to doubt Alessandro. Someone wanted me to believe he was the enemy. But my mother had known him. And she had chosen him. The question was no longer: Can I trust Alessandro De Luca? The question was: Who is so afraid of him telling the truth?
