Kate’s face paled slightly.
These people used to be her friends. Now they were in the VIP karaoke room she had bought, singing happily while bad-mouthing her with Zoey. She wanted to know—what had she ever done to wrong Zoey?

The door suddenly opened.
Everyone was startled by Kate’s unexpected entrance.
Someone recognized her and asked, “Kate Hastings? What are you doing here?”
Zoey raised her eyebrows, a flash of calculation crossing her eyes before she smiled warmly. “Kate, are you here to sing? Come, have a seat.”
With Zoey’s invitation, the group quickly reined in their earlier sneers.
