“Who is it?”
“Christopher, it’s Thomas White.”
It was Mr. White! His voice was so loud everyone heard it.
Everyone was puzzled. Why would Mr. White be calling Christopher?
Christopher immediately put the call on speakerphone.
Thomas White’s voice filled the room. “I’m calling to apologize. I’m sorry for what I did to your granddaughter. I thought she was willing to be with me, but I didn’t realize her parents had tricked her. I almost... I almost took advantage of her. I feel terrible.”
This short speech stunned Mrs. Hastings and Fiona into silence. They stood frozen, as if listening to a dream. Why would Thomas White go out of his way to call Christopher and confess?
After hanging up, Christopher looked at Mrs. Hastings with a fury so intense it was palpable.
