Chapter 2 Humiliation

1032 Words
She covered her mouth, chuckling softly. "The man you've been longing for is no longer yours. Now, everything here, including Hugo, belongs only to me." I watched Libby pace around the master bedroom, a surge of bitterness welling up inside me. When I first moved into Hugo's house, it was as plain as any single man's dwelling. It was I who, bit by bit, transformed it into the warm and cozy home it was now. Hugo often held me close, saying that it was thanks to me that his life felt so warm and complete. Yet, the home I had poured my heart into decorating had been invaded by another woman without my knowledge. Seeing me standing there speechless, Libby, confident she had intimidated me, only grew bolder. She plopped herself down on the large bed, stretching out her long legs. She gave me a scornful once-over from head to toe, then, as if showing off, she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, revealing a sparkling diamond earring and bracelet. "Hugo gave these to me. He said I have an air of nobility and should wear fine jewelry. But look at you. There isn't a single piece of jewelry on you. Hugo is really stingy with you. Well, it makes sense. Why waste jewelry on a washed-up housewife hidden away at home?" I watched her red lips open and close, feeling a strange sense of disgust. The pain in my stomach intensified. I clutched my abdomen, struggling to hide my discomfort. But she still wasn't going to let me off the hook. She walked toward me, her strong perfume assaulting my nose. I had smelled this scent on Hugo's suit before, but he had explained that it was probably from a female colleague in the crowded elevator. I hadn't thought much of it, naively believing him without question. Now, smelling it again, my already empty stomach lurched, and another wave of pain doubled me over. I retreated to the window, my back against the wall. I could retreat no further and could only weakly push her away. Unexpectedly, she took the opportunity to fall back hard against the wardrobe, creating a loud bang. "Hugo, help me..." Libby's sweet voice was laced with a sob. It was the kind of sound that would make any man's heart melt with pity, but to me, it was incredibly jarring. The moment the door swung open, I finally couldn't hold it back any longer. I started to vomit violently toward Libby. Libby, who had been holding herself with an air of elegance, let out a shrill scream. Hugo rushed in, his eyes immediately falling on Libby, who was sitting on the floor, covered in vomit, and me, standing to the side, retching. "Hugo... It's disgusting... I can't stand it," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "I was just trying to be nice, to advise this... this woman, to think about things from a different perspective. But not only did she not appreciate it, she pushed me to the ground and made herself throw up all over me..." Hugo helped her up with a sympathetic look, covering his nose as he escorted Libby to the bathroom to clean up. As soon as the reeking Libby was out of sight, Hugo let out a sigh of relief and turned back to me, his face grim. "She was just trying to be nice, why would you go so far?" He glared at me. "Libby takes great pride in her appearance. What you did to her was a blatant humiliation!" Looking at this aggressive man, I managed a wry smile. "You only care about her getting dirty, but you don't even ask why I suddenly vomited?" Hugo glanced at me indifferently, his voice laced with impatience. "Didn't Libby tell you? You deliberately made yourself throw up on her. How could you become like this, like a shrew! It's true what they say, you can take the girl out of the village... I must have been out of my mind to think you were pure and innocent!" I laughed bitterly, holding back my tears. I had already lost miserably in love; my pride wouldn't allow me to cry in front of this despicable pair. Seeing Libby about to come out, he took out his checkbook, scribbled down an amount, and shoved the check into my hand. Pointing to the door, he said in a harsh voice, "I won't be threatened by you just because you're pregnant. Now, take this check and leave!" The bathroom door opened, and Libby, dressed in her finery, walked out gracefully. Seeing me still there, she pouted in displeasure and said in a small voice, "Hugo's career is at its peak now. He's a senior executive in a listed company. He needs a capable wife who can help him in his career. You're just a country bumpkin. Take the money and go back to your village! It should be enough for you to live out the rest of your life in that backwater." Hugo wrapped his arm around Libby's shoulders, giving her a reassuring smile. When he looked at me, it was with a look of hostility. I looked at them and gave Hugo a big smile, as bright as the day we first met. He froze for a second, his feet moving as if to step towards me, but Libby tugged at his hand, pouting unhappily. Only then did he return to his previous cold demeanor. He used to hold me close after each promotion, saying that it was because of my meticulous care for him that he could be so brave and successful in his career. But now, all that was in the past had become an obstacle to his progress. I smiled and tore the check in my hand to shreds. "Don't worry, there's no way I could have your child." With that, I left without looking back. Mermaids and humans couldn't have children together, so there was no way I could bear his child. Mustering the last of my strength, I dialed my best friend's number and then finally succumbed to the darkness encroaching at the edges of my vision.
