Chapter 5: United Against The Past

CHAPTER 5: The ride back to the mansion was quiet, but it was no longer the cold silence they were used to. This silence felt different — heavy with unspoken words and lingering tension. Ethan hadn’t let go of Clara’s hand since they left the balcony. He held it firmly, his thumb gently brushing over her skin, as if reassuring himself that she was really there, and that she was his. Clara sat beside him, her mind still racing. She kept replaying the night — Elena’s threats, and Ethan’s fierce declaration that she was his wife. She told herself he was only acting to protect his reputation, but deep down, a small, hopeful voice whispered otherwise. When the car stopped at the gates, Ethan stepped out first and reached back to help her, offering his hand like a true gentleman. He didn’t let go even after she stood safely on the pavement. He led her inside, his presence making her feel small yet incredibly safe. The house was quiet, a sharp contrast to the noise and chaos of the gala. Instead of leaving her side as he usually did, Ethan led her straight into the living room. He pulled her gently until she stood right in front of him, searching her eyes deeply. “Are you sure you are alright?” he asked, his voice low and filled with real concern. “Elena knows exactly what to say to hurt people. Whatever she said out there… none of it is true. Do you understand?” Clara nodded, looking up at him. “I understand. She tried to make me feel like I don’t belong, or that I am only here for money. But I know who I am, and I know why I am here. Her words cannot hurt me.” Ethan let out a slow breath, a relieved smile touching his lips. He lifted his hand, his fingers hovering near her face before he brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his touch surprisingly gentle. “You are remarkable,” he whispered. “Most people would have crumbled. But you… you stand tall. You are stronger than anyone I know.” His hand lingered near her cheek, his thumb lightly tracing the line of her jaw. The air between them grew warmer. Clara found herself leaning slightly toward him, her heart beating fast. She saw his gaze drop to her lips, and for a moment, time seemed to stop. She thought he might kiss her. She wanted him to kiss her. But suddenly, Ethan pulled his hand away and stepped back, breaking the moment. He turned his face away, shoving his hands into his pockets, his expression shifting back to that guarded look he always wore. “We need to be careful,” he said, his voice cool again. “Elena wasn’t lying when she said this isn’t over. She is vindictive and powerful. She won’t stop until she destroys everything I have, and everyone I care about… and that includes you now.” Clara stepped closer, refusing to let him build those walls back up. “I am not afraid of her, Ethan. I have faced worse things — poverty, sickness, people looking down on me. She is just another obstacle. As long as we stand together, she cannot touch us.” Ethan looked at her, surprised that she used his first name, but he didn’t correct her. A strange mix of gratitude and something deeper swirled in his dark eyes. “You have no idea how dangerous she is,” he murmured. “She knows my weaknesses. She knows how to manipulate. And she knows… that you are the only thing right now that can get to me. If she finds out about the contract — that this marriage is fake, just a deal — she will use it to destroy me completely. She will humiliate me, expose you, and ruin everything I have built.” Clara’s eyes widened. She hadn’t thought about that. The contract was their secret, but it was also their biggest weakness. If anyone found out, especially Elena, everything would fall apart. “So we keep it a secret,” she said firmly. “Just like we agreed. To the world, I am Clara Hayes, your wife. I will play that part perfectly. I will not give her anything to use against us.” Ethan nodded slowly. “Good. But from now on, we need to be even more convincing. We need to act like a real couple, in public and even here in this house. If anyone — staff, partners, friends — suspects the truth, word will get to her. We cannot take any risks.” Clara swallowed hard. Being closer to him, acting like a real wife… it was exactly what she was starting to want, but it was also the most dangerous thing for her heart. Every moment near him made it harder to remember that this was temporary, just a job. “I understand,” she said steadily. “I will do whatever is necessary.” Ethan studied her face for a long moment, then turned toward the stairs, pausing halfway to look back at her. “Get some rest. Tomorrow things change. We will be on guard every second. But remember… no matter what she does, I will protect you. I promised, and I never break my promises. You are safe here. You are safe with me.” He walked up the stairs and disappeared, leaving Clara standing alone in the quiet room. She slowly made her way to her own bedroom, closing the door and leaning against it, letting out a long, shaky breath. She changed and sat by the window, looking out at the dark garden. She knew she was in deep trouble. She was falling for him — hard and fast — and it was only a matter of time before she got hurt. Because when the year ended, when the contract was fulfilled, when she got the money for her mother… she would have to walk away. And Ethan Hayes would never be hers to keep. Down the hall, Ethan sat on the edge of his bed, his head in his hands. He was confused and angry at himself. He had sworn never to let anyone close again. He had sworn he would never trust or care after what Elena did. But Clara… simple, stubborn, kind Clara… had broken through every wall he had built. He cared about her. More than he should. More than was safe. And Elena was right — that made her a target. The thought of anyone hurting her made a dark, dangerous rage rise inside him. He stood and walked to the window, looking out toward her room where her silhouette was visible against the light. I won’t let her get you, he vowed silently. I destroyed myself once by loving the wrong woman. I won’t let anyone destroy you… even if I have to stay away to keep you safe. But deep down, he knew it was already too late. He couldn’t stay away. And the more time he spent with her, the more he realized this contract marriage was no longer just a deal. It was becoming the only thing that made sense in his life. The next morning arrived bright and clear, but the atmosphere in the mansion was tense and alert. Clara came down to breakfast to find Ethan already there, dressed in a sharp suit, looking every bit the powerful CEO. Dark circles under his eyes told her he hadn’t slept either. He looked up as she entered, and for a second his expression softened, before returning to that guarded look. He stood and pulled out the chair next to him — a small, unexpected gesture that surprised her. “Good morning,” he said quietly as she sat. “Eat well. We have a long day ahead. I have arranged extra security here and at the company. From today, wherever you go, whoever you speak to… be careful. Trust no one except me.” Clara nodded, pouring coffee. “Understood. Do you think she will try something so soon?” Ethan’s jaw tightened. “I know her. She won’t wait. She will strike fast, to catch us off guard. She wants to break us before we get stronger together. And the first place she will look… is my company. She knows that is where my power lies. And she knows that is where you will be seen most often at my side.” He looked at her intensely. “Clara, today you are coming to the office with me. We have a board meeting, and I want you there as my wife. I want everyone to see us together — happy, united, unshakeable. I want her spies to report back exactly what we need them to hear: that nothing, and no one, can tear us apart.” Clara froze, her cup halfway to her lips. She had expected to stay home, away from the public eye. But going to his office, right into the heart of his world… it was a huge step. “Are you sure that is wise?” she asked softly. “Showing me off like this… it might make her angrier, make her try harder.” Ethan leaned across the table, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. “It is exactly what we need to do,” he said firmly. “We show her we are not hiding. We show her we are not afraid. We show her that you are my wife, you belong here, and you are not going anywhere. It is the only way to fight her. Are you ready?” Clara looked at him, seeing the trust and fear in his eyes, and knew there was no turning back. She straightened her shoulders, lifted her chin, and looked right back at him. “I am ready, Ethan. Wherever you go… I am right here with you.” Ethan smiled then — that genuine, rare smile that made his whole face light up — and reached across the table to cover her hand with his. “Good,” he whispered. “Because the war has just begun, Clara. And we are going to win.”
