CHAPTER 6:
The black luxury sedan pulled through the tall iron gates of Hayes Corporation Headquarters, gliding past the line of sleek cars parked out front and coming to a smooth stop right at the main entrance. The building itself was a towering glass and steel giant, piercing the sky—a physical symbol of Ethan’s power, influence, and everything he had built from nothing.
Clara took a deep breath as the driver stepped out to open their door. She smoothed the fabric of her dress, suddenly feeling the weight of the moment. This wasn’t just a visit; this was a declaration. Every person watching, every employee, every executive, every stranger glancing from the windows—they were all eyes that would report back, and every single one of them needed to see only one thing: Ethan Hayes and his wife, untouchable and united.
Before she could move, Ethan was already out of the car, walking around to her side. He offered his hand, his expression calm and commanding, but his eyes held a quiet message only she could read: Stay close to me. Trust me.
She placed her hand in his, and he curled his fingers firmly around hers, locking them together.
“Remember,” he said low enough only she could hear, his voice steady and deep. “Head high. Smile like you own this place. Because as far as everyone here is concerned… you do.”
Clara nodded, lifted her chin, and let him lead her forward.
As soon as they stepped into the grand lobby, the atmosphere shifted instantly. Conversations died down. Secretaries and executives paused mid-step, eyes widening as they saw the man at the top of the hierarchy walking in—not alone, as he usually was, but with Clara right beside him. She felt the weight of their stares, the whispers starting softly behind them, the curiosity mixed with shock.
Ethan didn’t flinch. He walked with long, confident strides, never slowing down, never loosening his grip on her hand. He greeted people with short, sharp nods, his presence demanding respect without him even needing to speak. He looked like a king entering his court, and by his side, Clara realized, she looked every bit the queen Elena had feared she would become.
They walked straight toward the private elevator reserved only for Ethan and his highest-ranking staff. As the doors slid shut, cutting them off from the curious eyes, Ethan let out a breath he seemed to have been holding, his shoulders dropping just a fraction. He turned to look at her, a flicker of worry crossing his face.
“You doing okay?” he asked softly, his thumb rubbing soothing circles over her knuckles. “I know it’s overwhelming. They are all watching, analysing every move.”
Clara let out a small laugh, shaking her head. “It’s strange… everyone is looking at me like I’m some kind of celebrity or threat. But I’m just… me.”
Ethan looked at her intensely, stepping a little closer in the confined space. “You are not just ‘you’ anymore, Clara. You are Mrs. Hayes. And right now, you are the strongest weapon I have against Elena. Never forget that.”
The elevator dinged, announcing their arrival at the top floor—the executive level. Before the doors even opened, Ethan straightened his suit jacket, the warmth in his eyes vanishing instantly, replaced by that cold, powerful mask of the CEO. When the doors slid open, he stepped out, pulling her with him, and the transformation was complete.
He led her straight to his massive office—spacious, modern, lined with bookshelves and floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the entire city. It was breathtaking, but also cold and serious.
“Make yourself comfortable,” Ethan said, releasing her hand only to walk over to his desk and press a button on the intercom. “Maria, please send in my assistant immediately. And bring coffee for Mrs. Hayes.”
He turned back to Clara, leaning against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms over his chest. “The board meeting starts in twenty minutes. I want you to sit at my right hand side. Don’t speak unless I ask you to, or unless someone addresses you directly. If they do… answer with confidence, and remember who you are to me.”
Clara walked closer, her voice lowering. “And what if Elena has people inside that room? People loyal to her?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, his gaze hardening. “She has plenty of them. But they won’t dare say anything outright. They will watch, they will test us, they will look for cracks in our armour. Our job is to show them there are no cracks. That we are one unit, and attacking one of us means attacking both.”
A sharp knock on the door interrupted them. A young woman in a neat suit entered, carrying a tray with coffee and files. She looked nervous, her eyes darting quickly between Ethan and Clara. She placed the coffee down, handed Ethan the files, and hurried out, closing the door quietly behind her.
Ethan picked up the files, scanning through them quickly, but his mind was clearly elsewhere. “Elena isn’t just sitting back waiting, Clara. I know her. While we are here making our stand, she is already moving pieces behind the scenes. She will try to undermine me, spread rumours, make me look unstable or weak because of you. She wants the board to doubt my leadership.”
He tossed the files onto the desk and looked at her, his expression softening just a little. “That is why you being here is everything. You are my proof that I am stable, that I am settled, that I have everything under control. You are the image of my success.”
Clara walked over to the window, looking down at the tiny cars and people moving far below. “It feels like a game of chess. Every move we make, she counters. Every defence we build, she looks for a way around.”
She felt him step up behind her—close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body, close enough that her breath caught in her throat. He didn’t touch her, but his presence surrounded her completely.
“It is exactly like chess,” he murmured, his voice low and vibrating through her. “But Elena has always played to win by destroying her opponent. I play to win by protecting what is mine. And right now… you are what is mine to protect.”
The way he said it sent shivers down her spine. It wasn’t just the contract speaking anymore. There was a raw, possessive edge to his words that made her heart race faster than it should. She turned slowly to face him, finding him standing so close she only had to tilt her head up to look straight into his dark eyes.
“Then I will play my part perfectly, Ethan,” she whispered. “I will be the wife you need me to be. I will stand by you, no matter what they say, no matter what Elena tries. We win this together.”
For a second, the air between them shifted. The room seemed to shrink. Ethan’s gaze dropped to her lips, that familiar tension sparking between them again—electric, dangerous, impossible to ignore. He lifted his hand, and for a heartbeat, she thought he would kiss her right there, in the middle of his office, and she realized with terrifying clarity that she would let him. She wanted him to.
But just as his fingers brushed lightly against her cheek, a loud buzzer sounded from his desk—the alarm set for the meeting.
Ethan pulled back abruptly, his hand falling to his side, his expression hardening again as he stepped away. He turned to grab his suit jacket and files, hiding the emotion that had flashed across his face just moments before.
“It’s time,” he said, his voice gruff, avoiding her eyes for a second before he looked back at her, determined and focused. “Ready?”
Clara straightened her posture, smoothed her dress one last time, and nodded. She wasn’t just Clara Hayes, the girl from the poor side of town anymore. She was his wife. She was his partner in this war.
“I’m ready.”
Ethan walked to the door, opened it, and offered his arm to her. As she took it, he guided her out into the hallway, where more employees were watching and whispering. He walked with her toward the large boardroom at the end of the hall, his head held high, his steps confident.
When he pushed open the heavy double doors of the boardroom, every single person inside fell silent.
Long, polished mahogany tables sat filled with men and women in expensive suits—powerful, wealthy, influential people. And at the far end of the table, sitting in the chair usually reserved for the highest-ranking members, sat a woman with blonde hair and cold, sharp eyes that locked onto Clara instantly.
Elena.
She smiled—a cruel, cold smile that didn’t reach her eyes—and clapped her hands slowly once, twice, as Ethan and Clara walked in.
“Well, well,” Elena purred, her voice cutting through the silence. “Look who finally decided to bring his little wife out to play. Welcome to the real battlefield, Clara. I do hope you survive it.”
Ethan’s arm tightened under Clara’s hand, his body going rigid with anger, but he didn’t stop walking. He led her straight to the head of the table, pulled out the chair next to his own, and helped her sit down, just as a loving husband would.
He leaned down close to her ear, so only she could hear, his voice dark and dangerous.
“Don’t say a word,” he whispered. “Let me handle her. She wants a reaction. She wants us to look weak. We give her nothing.”
He stood tall, turned to face the room full of people, and fixed his gaze directly on Elena, his expression cold and unyielding.
“Let’s begin,” Ethan announced, his voice commanding and powerful, drowning out every whisper. “And let me make one thing perfectly clear to everyone in this room… My wife sits here because she belongs here. She is part of this company, part of my life, and anyone who has a problem with that… has a problem with me.”
Clara looked at him, her heart pounding wildly, fear mixing with a strange, fierce pride. The war wasn’t just coming… it had officially started right here, right now. And in this room, at this moment, she knew one thing for certain: she wasn’t standing alone.
