The Man Who Ran

812 Words
The warehouse echoed with shouts as James's security team engaged the masked men. "Drop your weapons!" "Move! Move!" The attackers scattered in different directions. Some tried to fight. Others headed for the exits. Adrian stood protectively in front of Serena. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head, still trying to catch her breath. "I'm fine." Before she could say another word, another masked man charged toward them with a metal pipe. "Look out!" Adrian turned just in time. The pipe grazed his shoulder instead of striking his head. He staggered but quickly regained his balance. James rushed in with two guards and restrained the attacker. "Secure him!" James ordered. Within minutes, the remaining men fled into the darkness, leaving two of their companions behind. The warehouse fell silent. --- Serena looked around frantically. "Ryan." Adrian frowned. "What about him?" "He was standing right there." She pointed toward the back door. The door swayed gently in the night breeze. "He escaped." James cursed under his breath. "He must have slipped out during the fight." One of the guards approached. "Sir, the police are on their way." Adrian nodded. "Good." He looked at Serena. "We're staying until they arrive." --- A few minutes later, Detective Daniel Foster walked into the warehouse with several officers. His eyes immediately fell on Serena. "Miss Brooks." "I didn't expect to see you here again." She managed a tired smile. "Neither did I." Adrian stepped forward. "Detective." "I'm Adrian Kingsley." The detective nodded in recognition. "I know who you are." James quickly explained everything that had happened. Ryan's phone call. The arranged meeting. The masked men. Ryan's disappearance. Detective Foster listened carefully without interrupting. When James finished, the detective turned to Serena. "Did Ryan say anything important before the attack?" She thought back to the conversation. "He said..." She paused. "...the missing three million dollars was only a small part of something much bigger." The detective's expression changed. "Are you certain?" She nodded. "Those were his exact words." Foster wrote the statement in his notebook. "That gives us a new direction." --- Across the city, Ryan slammed the door of his luxury apartment. His breathing was uneven. Bianca entered a moment later. "You left me." Ryan turned sharply. "I had no choice." "You promised nobody would get hurt!" "I didn't hire those men." Bianca stared at him. "Then who did?" Ryan was silent. His silence frightened her more than any answer. --- Back at Kingsley Manor, Margaret was waiting in the living room. The moment Serena walked through the door, Margaret hurried over. "My dear!" She gently held Serena's shoulders. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine." Margaret turned to Adrian. "And you?" He smiled reassuringly. "Just a bruised shoulder." Margaret frowned. "I'll have the doctor look at it." "It's nothing." "You said that when you broke your arm at fifteen." Adrian laughed. "I remember." "So do I," Margaret replied firmly. "And you still saw the doctor." Serena couldn't help smiling. Despite all his success, Adrian still became an obedient grandson around Margaret. --- Later that evening, Serena stepped onto the terrace for some fresh air. The events of the night replayed in her mind. Ryan's warning. The attack. His escape. She was so lost in thought that she didn't hear Adrian approach. "You should be resting." She looked up. "So should you." He leaned against the railing. "I've had worse injuries." She smiled faintly. "Thank you." "For what?" "For coming after me." Adrian looked out over the gardens. "I couldn't let anything happen to you." The words hung between them. Neither spoke for several seconds. Finally, Serena asked softly, "Why?" He thought carefully before answering. "At first..." "I helped because my grandmother asked me to." "And now?" He met her eyes. "Now..." "I think helping you is the right thing to do." Serena looked away, hiding the unexpected warmth those words stirred inside her. --- The next morning, Kingsley Global's forensic investigation officially began. A team of specialists entered Mercer Financial's headquarters with court-authorized access to financial records related to Serena's case. Charles Mercer watched them with growing unease. "This is unnecessary," he protested. The lead investigator remained calm. "We're conducting an independent audit." "It won't interfere with your business." Ryan stood quietly beside his father. For the first time in weeks... He looked nervous. Very nervous. As the investigators moved deeper into the company's financial records, one of them paused. "That's strange." Another investigator walked over. "What is it?" The first investigator pointed to a series of transactions. "Someone deleted part of the audit trail." "But..." He zoomed in on the screen. "...they didn't delete all of it." A faint digital footprint remained. Small. Almost invisible. But enough to suggest that someone inside Mercer Financial had gone to great lengths to hide the truth. And for the first time since Serena's nightmare began... The lies were beginning to c***k.
