An Offer Too Dangerous to Refuse

The headline spread across the internet like wildfire. WHO IS ADRIAN KINGSLEY'S MYSTERY WOMAN? A blurry photograph showed Serena stepping out of the black Rolls-Royce outside Kingsley Manor. Although her face wasn't perfectly clear, anyone who knew her could recognize her. Serena's heart sank. "This is bad." Margaret remained remarkably calm. "I expected the media to notice." Adrian frowned. "You expected this?" Margaret smiled knowingly. "I've lived with reporters for over thirty years, Adrian. The moment my car picked up an unmarried woman, someone was bound to follow it." Adrian shook his head. "They're getting bolder." James, the head of security, placed the tablet on the coffee table. "The story has already been shared thousands of times." He scrolled down. "There are also comments connecting Miss Brooks to the Mercer scandal." Serena closed her eyes briefly. "So now everyone thinks I'm chasing another billionaire." --- Margaret walked over and gently took Serena's hand. "My dear, people will always create stories when they don't know the truth." "But you don't have to let those stories define you." Serena forced a smile. "I've had enough strangers deciding who I am." Adrian watched her quietly. He noticed that despite her exhaustion, she held her head high. She wasn't looking for pity. She was trying to hold on to her dignity. That impressed him. --- A few moments later, Serena stood. "I should leave." Margaret nodded. "I won't pressure you." "But before you go..." She handed Serena the contract folder. "Take it home." "Read every page." "If you decide it's not for you, simply return it." Serena accepted it. "Thank you." As she turned toward the door, Adrian spoke. "I'll walk you out." --- Outside, the night air was pleasantly cool. The driveway was illuminated by elegant garden lights. For several moments, neither of them spoke. Finally, Adrian broke the silence. "My grandmother means well." "I know." "But she has a habit of rearranging people's lives." Serena laughed softly. "I noticed." They continued walking. "I should also apologize," Adrian said. "For what?" "If the media hadn't seen you here..." "You wouldn't be facing another round of rumors." Serena looked at him. "This wasn't your fault." "No." "It wasn't yours either." Their eyes met for a brief moment. For the first time since meeting him, Serena saw something unexpected. Loneliness. Behind his calm confidence... Behind the expensive suit and billionaire reputation... He looked like a man carrying responsibilities that never seemed to end. --- The chauffeur opened the car door. Before Serena got in, Adrian spoke again. "One more thing." She turned. "If you decide not to sign..." "I'll respect your decision." "And if I do?" He smiled faintly. "Then we'll have a very unusual engagement." For the first time in days, Serena found herself smiling without forcing it. "Goodnight, Mr. Kingsley." "Goodnight, Miss Brooks." --- As the Rolls-Royce drove away, Adrian remained standing in the driveway. James approached quietly. "You like her." Adrian looked at him. "I've known her for two days." "That's not an answer." Adrian smiled slightly. "I respect her." James nodded. "Mrs. Kingsley will be pleased to hear that." Adrian sighed. "Please don't tell her." "I'm afraid she already knows." --- Back at Olivia's apartment, Serena found her friend waiting anxiously. "Well?" Olivia practically pulled her inside. "How did dinner go?" Serena dropped onto the sofa. "You won't believe me." "Try me." Serena placed the contract on the coffee table. "Margaret Kingsley wants me to pretend to be Adrian's fiancée." Olivia stared at her. Then she burst into laughter. "I'm serious." Olivia quickly stopped laughing. "...You're serious." Serena nodded. Olivia picked up the folder and began reading. Halfway through, her expression changed. "They're offering to hire forensic accountants." "And one of the best legal teams in the country." Serena sat beside her. "I don't know what to do." Olivia closed the folder. "I do." Serena looked at her. "You've spent the last three days losing everything because powerful people lied about you." She pointed at the contract. "This could be your chance to fight back." "But I'd be lying too." Olivia shook her head. "There's a difference." "You'd be entering a legal agreement that both parties understand." "You wouldn't be stealing." "You wouldn't be cheating anyone." "You'd simply be helping each other." Serena remained silent. Deep down... She knew Olivia had a point. --- Across town, Ryan Mercer poured himself a glass of whiskey as Bianca entered his office. "Have you seen this?" She held up her phone. Ryan frowned as he read the headline. SERENA BROOKS SPOTTED WITH BILLIONAIRE ADRIAN KINGSLEY. His smile vanished. "What is she doing with the Kingsleys?" "I don't know." Ryan's expression darkened. "Find out." Bianca looked uneasy. "Do you think it's important?" Ryan slowly set down his glass. "If Serena gains the Kingsley family's support..." "...everything we've planned could fall apart." For the first time since the wedding... Ryan felt something he hadn't expected. Fear.
