CHAPTER SEVEN: SCARED TO DEATH
The silence in the room is deafening, broken only by the sound of Melissa's racing heart. She sits frozen on the bed, her body trembling with a mix of fear and anticipation. She knows Xavier will return, but what state will he be in?
Her mind wanders back to their interrupted moment, her body still humming with unfulfilled desire. Despite her better judgment, she can't deny the thrill that courses through her at the thought of him. She's playing with fire, and she knows it.
Melissa's gaze drifts around the luxurious bedroom, her eyes falling on a grand bookshelf in the corner. She rises from the bed, the bedsheets slipping off her body as she pads across the thick carpet.
She runs her fingers along the spines of the books, some leather-bound and others covered in gilded patterns. The scent of old paper and ink fills her nose, the smell a small comfort in the unfamiliar surroundings. She picks one of the books off the shelf, her curiosity piqued.
Melissa perches on the edge of the table, the book open in her lap. She runs her fingers along the pages, the delicate texture a stark contrast to the rough strength of Xavier's hands. She turns the pages, the words blurring before her eyes. She isn't reading, not really. Instead, her mind is focused on the man who's just left the room.
She wonders if he'll forgive her defiance, or if he'll punish her. She shudders at the thought, the idea both terrifying and exciting.
Melissa makes her way down the winding staircase and out to the pool area, the warm sunlight caressing her skin. She's wearing one of Xavier's button-down shirts, the garment too large for her frame and hanging loose around her thighs. She lets her hair down, the strands falling in dark waves around her shoulders.
The pool glimmers in the sunlight, the water an inviting shade of turquoise. She dips her toes into the cool water, her mind still reeling from the events of the morning.
The soft cotton of Xavier's shirt feels like a cocoon her life.
The sun's warmth kisses her skin, and she closes her eyes, letting the stress of the morning melt away. In this serene moment, she's just Melissa, not Xavier's wife or his victim. Just herself.
Melissa dives into the pool with a splash, the cool water enveloping her in a refreshing embrace. She surfaces, the droplets beading on her skin, her hair fanning out around her like a dark halo. She swims across the pool, the rhythm of her strokes a soothing melody. For a moment, she's lost in the simplicity of the water, the gentle waves lapping against her skin.
But as she reaches the other end of the pool, reality intrudes. She looks up at the windows of the mansion, wondering if Xavier is watching her.
The sound of stilettos clicking against the patio floor breaks the silence, the noise echoing off the walls of the mansion. Melissa's head jerks up, her heart skipping a beat as she searches for the source of the sound.
From the shadows of the pool house emerges a woman, her red hair cascading down her back in curls, her body draped in an ivory cocktail dress. Her lips are painted a blood-red, her eyes narrowed with suspicion as she takes in the sight of Melissa.
The woman fixes Melissa with a disdainful glare, her eyes raking over the white shirt and dripping wet hair. "You must be the new maid," she says, her voice dripping with disdain. "I'm surprised Xavier hired someone like you. You don't exactly look the part."
Melissa bristles at the comment, her chin lifting with defiance. "I'm not a maid," she says, her voice steady despite the anger boiling inside her. "I'm Xavier's wife."
The woman's eyes widen in shock, her red lips parting in surprise. "Xavier's...wife?" She lets out a laugh, although there's no humor in it. "You must be mistaken, darling. I'm Alicia Denise, and I've been with Xavier for years. I think I'd know if he got married."
Melissa sets her jaw, her fists clenching at her sides. "I'm not mistaken. He married me last week. In Monaco." She raises an eyebrow, daring the woman to argue.
Melissa squares her shoulders, the authority in her voice unmistakable. "His name is Mr. Woods. And he's my husband. I suggest you address him as such from now on, Alicia." She gives the other woman a scathing look, the faintest hint of satisfaction in her expression. "And if you know what's good for you, you'll stay away from him. He's not yours anymore."
Alicia's face contorts in fury, her hands balling into fists. "You don't know what you're talking about, you little tramp.
In the midst of the brewing confrontation, Xavier strides into the pool area, his expression unreadable. His eyes sweep over the two women, taking in the tense atmosphere.
"What's going on here?" he asks, his voice cold. He steps closer, his gaze fixed on the two women. "Melissa, what are you doing out here in my shirt? And Alicia, what are you doing here?"
Alicia's face softens, her expression suddenly sweet and innocent. "Xavier, darling, I just came by to say hello.
Melissa sidles up to Xavier, her hand resting on his chest as she looks up at him with a coy smile. "I was warm, so I borrowed one of your shirts. It feels so nice against my skin. Just like you." She leans into him, her fingers tracing lazy circles against his chest.
Alicia watches the scene with a look of barely concealed rage, her nails digging into the palms of her hands. "Xavier, I think we need to talk," she says, her voice low.
Melissa's smile disappears, replaced by a scowl as she pulls away from Xavier, her eyes darting between him and Alicia. "Who is she?" she demands, her voice ringing with indignation. "And why is she here?"
Xavier places a hand on Melissa's shoulder, his tone even and calm. "Melissa, this is Alicia. She's an old friend." His gaze flicks to Alicia, his eyes hardening. "An old friend who doesn't know when to stay away."
Melissa turns to Xavier, her voice pleading. "Xavier, baby, I don't like her. I don't want her around. She's clearly jealous of me." She presses closer to him, her fingers twisting into the fabric of his shirt. "Can't you just make her leave?"
Xavier's jaw tightens, his gaze still fixed on Alicia. "Alicia, perhaps it's time for you to go," he says, his words laced with a threat. "I think you've overstayed your welcome."
Alicia's expression darkens, her lips twisting into a sneer. "I see how it is," she says, her voice dripping with venom. "You've replaced me with this little gold-digger." She steps closer to Melissa, her eyes narrowed in contempt. "Just remember, Xavier, that she's nothing but a thief. She's only after your money. You're making a big mistake."
Xavier's hand tightens on Melissa's shoulder, protective and possessive. "Get out of my house, Alicia. Before I throw you out myself."
Melissa's eyes flash with defiance, her chin lifting with pride. "That's Mrs. Woods to you, Alicia," she retorts, her voice filled with confidence. "And if you must know, I'm the owner of the Smithfield NC. I don't need his money. So, why don't you take your sour grapes and leave?"
Alicia's face pales, her mouth falling open in shock. She takes a step back, her eyes darting between Melissa and Xavier. "Fine," she snaps, her voice shaking with rage.
Melissa steps closer to Alicia, her voice low and dangerous. "Oh, and one more thing, Alicia. Before you leave, you should know that I'm going to make sure you never set foot near Xavier or this house again. And that fake ass of yours? You better be prepared to kiss it goodbye." She smirks, a look of triumph on her face. "Because I'm not someone you want to mess with."
Alicia's hands fly to her posterior, her eyes widening in alarm as she realizes that Melissa must have known about her implants. "You b***h!" she hisses, her cheeks flaming with embarrassment. She turns and flees, her heels clicking madly on the patio as she hurries towards the gate.
Melissa watches her go, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. "That's right, Alicia," she calls after her. "You'd better run. You're no match for me." She turns to Xavier, a look of victory in her eyes
Alicia reaches her car, her hands shaking as she fumbles with the keys. She glances back at the mansion, fear and uncertainty flooding through her.
"Mrs. Woods," she mutters under her breath, the name tasting like ash on her tongue. Melissa's threat echoes in her mind, a chill running down her spine. She knows that Melissa is dangerous, perhaps even more so than Xavier. And she has no doubt that Melissa will make good on her promise to ruin her.
Alicia climbs into her car, slamming the door shut.
Alicia sits in the driver's seat, her body trembling as she starts the car. Her mind races, thoughts of Melissa's threats and Xavier's cold dismissal filling her with panic.
As she pulls out of the driveway, she can't shake the feeling that she's made a grave mistake. She's underestimated Melissa, a mistake that could cost her dearly. Alicia knows that Melissa is powerful, wealthy, and now has Xavier's protection.
She shudders, her hands tightening on the steering wheel as the weight of her situation sinks in. She's in deep trouble.
