DARIUS RISES

CHAPTER 19: DARIUS RISES Midnight struck the fortress like a funeral bell. Not from Blackthorn’s tower. From the valley below. War drums. Deep. Ancient. Savage. Each beat vibrated through the stone walls and into Saelith’s bones. Ten thousand feet moving in unison. Ten thousand blades being drawn from scabbards. Ten thousand throats chanting one name. Darius. Veyran stood motionless on the highest tower of Blackthorn fortress. His silhouette cut sharp against the night sky. Cloak snapping in the cold wind. Sword unsheathed at his side, the blade catching moonlight like liquid silver. Below him, the horizon burned with fire. Ten thousand torches. Ten thousand rogues. Ten thousand reasons to run. But Veyran Blackthorn didn’t run. He never had. Not in ten years of war. Not when empires fell. Not when his own father died. He stood. Always stood. That was why they called him the King’s Wrath. Footsteps echoed on the spiral stairs behind him. Light. Measured. Fearless. Saelith. She climbed the tower without armor. Without hesitation. Just a dark gown that flowed like smoke around her legs and the dagger strapped to her thigh. The same dagger that ended Fenris yesterday. Blood still stained the blade if you looked close enough. She stopped beside him. Didn’t ask permission. Didn’t wait for invitation. Mates didn’t need permission to stand together. She took his hand. Their fingers laced automatically. Instantly, their mate marks flared. Silver on her wrist. Gold on his collarbone. Light so bright it pushed back the darkness for ten feet around them. The bond between them pulsed once, twice, steady and strong as a war drum of its own. “How many?” she asked. Voice quiet. Voice calm. Voice of a female who jumped off a three-story wall and walked away. Veyran didn’t look at her. Kept his golden eyes on the approaching army. “Ten thousand,” he said. Voice flat. Voice of a general counting corpses before the battle started. “Maybe ten thousand five hundred. Darius stripped the northern wastes bare. Every exile. Every murderer. Every wolf the Moon rejected. He heard Fenris died. He heard a Luna rose in Blackthorn. He comes to erase us both.” Saelith squeezed his hand. “Then ten thousand it is,” she said simply. No fear. No shaking. “We killed Fenris when he had three brothers at his back. We’ll kill Darius when he has ten thousand dogs at his feet.” Finally Veyran turned. Looked down at her. Really looked. Gold eyes searching silver eyes for cracks, for doubt, for the slave girl who used to flinch at loud noises. Found nothing. Only fire. Only Luna. Only the female who chose him when she could have chosen freedom. “Saelith,” he said her name like a warning. Like a prayer. “You need to understand what tomorrow means. Darius doesn’t want my crown. Crowns mean nothing to rogues. He wants you. He wants to break me by breaking you. He wants me to watch while they tear you apart piece by piece. That’s his kind of victory.” Saelith smiled up at him. Small. Fierce. Absolutely fearless. The same smile she wore while jumping off that wall. “Let him try,” she whispered. Voice steady as stone. “Let him bring ten thousand. Let him bring a hundred thousand. I’m not the broken thing he threw away ten years ago, Veyran. I’m not the slave who cried in chains. I’m the Luna who jumped for you. I’m the female who killed Fenris for you. I’m the mate who chose you when the world told me to run. I don’t run anymore. Not from Darius. Not from death. Not from you. Never from you.” The bond between them exploded with heat and light and something stronger than both. Ten years of Veyran’s loneliness shattered. Ten years of Saelith’s running ended. Two broken souls, finally whole, finally ready. Below in the courtyard, the pack gathered in perfect silence. No one spoke. No one panicked. This was Blackthorn. This was the pack that survived ten years under the King’s Wrath. Warriors strapped on armor dented from a hundred battles. Mothers sharpened knives while children slept behind them. Healers ground herbs and prepared thread. The old and the young were hidden deep in the stone heart of the fortress. But every wolf who could lift a blade stood in that courtyard. Because yesterday their Luna chose them. Because today their Alpha wouldn’t break. Veyran stepped to the very edge of the tower. The wind tore at his cloak. He raised his sword high. The blade screamed as it cut the air, a sound like a dying wolf, a sound like war beginning. “PACK OF BLACKTHORN!” His voice rolled across the fortress like thunder. Like judgment. Like a king calling his people to stand or fall. “Hear me! Tomorrow at dawn we meet ten thousand enemies! Not for land! Not for gold! Not for glory! We fight for blood! We fight for family! We fight for the Luna who jumped from a wall for us when we were nothing to her! Who bled for us when we didn’t deserve it! Who chose us when she could have walked away!” The courtyard erupted. Not in fear. In fury. In loyalty. In love. “BLACKTHORN!” they roared back. One voice. One pack. One heartbeat. “BLACKTHORN! BLACKTHORN!” The sound hit the mountains and bounced back. Hit the enemy camp and made their torches flicker. Made ten thousand rogues pause in their march for one second. Saelith stepped forward beside him. Looked down at the wolves who knelt for her yesterday and would die for her tomorrow. She raised her dagger. The blade caught moonlight and threw it back like a challenge. “I AM SAELITH BLACKTHORN!” she shouted. Her voice didn’t shake. Didn’t break. Carried clear across stone and steel and fear. “YOUR LUNA! Yesterday you bent your knees to me in respect! Tomorrow we stand together in war! Darius thinks he comes for an easy kill! He thinks a female raised in chains will shatter! He thinks wrong! Because the Luna of Blackthorn does NOT break! The Alpha of Blackthorn does NOT fall! And TOGETHER… TOGETHER WE DO NOT LOSE! Not to ten thousand! Not to ten million! NOT EVER!” The pack howled. Not a cry. A promise. A vow written in blood and teeth and loyalty. Ten thousand enemies meant nothing when you had a Luna who jumped and an Alpha who loved without limits. Veyran turned back to her. Pulled her into his arms with his free hand. Kissed her like it was the last time. Like it was the first time. Like every time in between. Hard. Desperate. Full of ten years of wanting and one day of having and forever of refusing to let go. When he pulled back, both of them breathing hard, he pressed his forehead to hers. “Whatever happens when the sun rises,” he whispered. Voice rough. Voice honest. Voice of a male who never begged but begged her now. “Know this truth, Saelith. I choose you. In war. In peace. In life. In death. In victory. In defeat. In every world, in every life, in every breath… always you. Only you.” Tears burned Saelith’s eyes but she didn’t let them fall. Not now. Not when her Alpha needed strength from her. She kissed him back with equal fire. Equal vow. Equal certainty. “Always you, my King,” she whispered against his lips. “My Alpha. My heart walking outside my body. Let Darius bring his ten thousand. Let the Moon herself fall from the sky. As long as we fall together, Veyran. As long as my last breath is your name. That’s all I ask. That’s all I need.” The war drums grew louder. Closer. The ground under their feet vibrated with the rhythm of approaching death. In the east, the sky began to lighten from black to gray. Dawn was coming. War was coming. Veyran sheathed his sword with a final sound of steel. Looked out at the sea of fire advancing on his home. Then looked back at Saelith. At his Luna. At his reason for fighting. “Then we meet them at dawn, my Queen,” he said quietly. Calmly. The calm of a predator before the kill. “Side by side. Shoulder to shoulder. Your dagger and my sword. Your silver eyes and my golden rage. Blackthorn does not kneel to rogues. Blackthorn does not break under pressure. Blackthorn wins. Or we die trying. There is no third path.” Saelith lifted her dagger and kissed the blade. The same blade that tasted Fenris’s blood yesterday. “Blackthorn wins,” she echoed. Voice soft but carrying the weight of an oath. Eyes glowing silver with power and fury and love that refused to lose. “For the pack that knelt. For us who chose each other. For love that survived ten years of ash and chains. Darius wants war? He’ll find it. And he’ll find his grave.” The Moon hung high and full above them. Witness. Goddess. Mother. Ten thousand enemies marched closer with every passing second. The fortress prepared for blood. For fire. For endings and beginnings. But on the highest tower stood two souls bound by something stronger than chains, stronger than blood, stronger than death itself. King and Queen. Alpha and Luna. Veyran and Saelith. Two against ten thousand. And love had already won the moment she chose him yesterday. Tomorrow was just proof. Dawn would rise. War would come. But Darius would learn what every wolf in the north needed to learn: You don’t threaten a mated pair who has nothing left to lose except each other. You don’t threaten Blackthorn. You die. --- EPISODE END To be continued in Chapter 20: THE BATTLE OF BLACKTHORN
